I started this off the same way as Robert describes, but once I had the cps on the top ring in place, I deleted everything except the top ring then extruded it down. This way I only had to tweek one set of cps. Then I connected the cps to make the hole.

One thing I have noticed using many stamps of the same decal is that if you want to edit the placement of the decal, you get all the stamped geometry overlapping. This is great if you use different areas of the one decal for UV mapping, but if you reuse the same decal area on several geometries it gets very messy.

Flocking does work in 10.5r, on the Mac, just make sure you have draw particles "on" in the render options.

Enjoy the ride, and if you need any help, just ask.

Very interesting . It is quite cool having motion control in 2 axes. It look s like it might be quite a bit more work than setting up siders though.

Another thought about the rings. I was able to make them go away by giving the light's edge softness a value.

Thanks Steve.

I remember seeing a list comparing porcessors and render times somewhere on the hash site, but I can't find it. Can someone point me at it please?

Thanks you for all the great information. I'm glad you guys agree with each other, it makes my job a lot easier. I am curios why Nixie and npcrosby ae thinking of getting powerbooks. I also thought that I would get some comments from diehard Mac fans, but so far nothing.

I never thought I'd say this, but I think I want to buy a PC. I feel like I just came out of the closet or something.
I'm planning on buying a notebook and after comparing the prices and features of Macs and PCs, there really isn't much choice. Mac ibooks start at $1800 CDN and you get a 12inch, 900 Mhz, G4. PCs notebooks start at about $1500 CDN and you get a 14 inch, 2.6 Ghz P4. Since speed really matters in the rendering game, the PCs win. I also think it will be good for me to be OS bilingual.
There are a few things I'd like to know about first, always keeping in mind what works best for running A:M.
What is the difference between the Intel P4, Intel Celeron, and Athlon chips?
From a new users point of view, What is the difference between Windows XP home and Pro?
Which video cards are good, and which have problems with A:M?
And, is there a big difference between the name brands like HP, Compaq, etc, and the no-names like Cicero, and Medion?
I'm also wondering how easy is it to network Macs and PCs.
I really appreciate any advice, and feel free to be brief, long tech info on PCs will be lost on me.

I think it's a good idea. I'd like to know who else is here in Vancouver, B.C. Although, you may find that a lot of people like to be anonymous.

You might be interested in my tutorial on using panaramic street scenes for making animation sets. You can find it here:Tut.

Have you tried turning the quality up. I found I needed to set it to 1000% or more.

You can also scale the camera if it makes seeing what your doing easier.

Thanks for the info Randy.

how do you open the project file in AM when it is all text?
Save it as a text file from your browser, make sure it has a ".prj" on the end, then open it from inside A:M.

The only thing I can suggest is to re-boot in OS 9 and try your render again. A:M doesn't always run well in OSX. I haven't heard of rendering problems with OSX, but it might be worth a try. I run A:M in 9.2.2, and I find it works well.

Playing around a bit more with Steve's project. I changed the shadows to Z buffered, to soften the shadows, and the turbulance to cellturb, to look like dust. Rendered with 1 pass at 2:36. Greg's computer is a bit faster than my Mac G4/400.

I tried Steves project and it worked fine, just like Steves render. Thanks for passing on the solution. A:M 10.5q on a Mac. I wonder though, why the slight shift in the light over 1 second.

What you really need is some editing software. If you are on a budget and have a Mac, there is imovie, for free. I think there are similar apps for the PC. For $30 you can get QuickTime pro from Apple, which you can peice shots together with and add sound where you want it. QT Pro is a good tool for compression no mater what you edit in.

As Phil said, posting a clip would help, but I wonder if you are talking about anti-aliasing flicker. If you are using multipass off or a low number of passes, ie 4 or less, the anti-aliasing, or edge smoothing, may be too low to prevent the edges from flckering. I'm not sure if this is clear, but seeing a clip would show the problem.

I had another try this mornig. The sun does light up the opposite wall so I switched to 2 kleigs and made the cone angles fit the window opening. There is also a bulb light in the box to illuminate the inside. I had to put the volumetric quality up to %800 to get rid of the banding.
-
After a quick test I got this to work. The only trick was to aim the sun through the window and make the width a bit larger. If the width was a lot wider than the window, I got the volumetric coming through the wall too. I guess you need 1 light for each window. Tried it with a kleig, but there were lots more problems with bleed through and the volumetric cone not reaching the floor. The only light in the scene is the sun with volumetrics.

You don't need to use netrender. Steve S. was quoted on this forum as saying Hash doesn't care how many machines you run A:M on as long as only 1 person is using it. As for using your old Macs to render on you would be much better off if you could get your hands on an 800 Mhz or 1 gig machine. Heck a G4/400 would probably go faster than the G3 and the 9600 put together.
