  1. I was inspire by Xtaz's image and desription of Image Based Lighting using HDR images. My results weren't as impressive, but i don't have the patience to wait 6 hours to see how it turns out. I do like how it worked, but I added 2 lights to give the object some shadows. I didn't get shadows from the IBL alone. I don't know if that comes with more passes. Maybe someone can fill me in. Here are the images I did get. I'm showing the fully lit image and ones with IBL only and Kleigs only for comparison. I plan on doing more testing to get IBL figured out better. Any info or comments appreciated.

  2. Cool looking chair. I'm no interior designer, but the room looks more clasical than modern to me. Most modern construction doesn't use moldings along the floors and ceiling, and fireplaces are gas, simple and built into the wall. At least in this part of the world. Try Googling images "modern livingroom" and see what comes up.

  3. Hi. I work for an A-V event production company that does lighting and sound for concerts. I wanted to see how it would work doing lighting previz in A:M, and try out my own ideas for shows. I tried to incorperate a few basic lighting styles, with plans to add more once I had a system worked out. I found that it is a lot of work and I need to work on setting up a good system for general light control. To control the lights I use a combination of poses, actions, and cho actions. I would preffer to have a library of premade actions, but that didn't always work. Anyways, here are some stills and a short animation of the work so far.

    C+C welcome.

    The video is 7 meg

  4. So now I can import both Vodoo an Icarus cam data. The thing I'm wondering now is, how do I tell how far from the camera objects should be in relation to the video. For example, I'm using the building sample from Icarus, is there a way to tell where in the cho the corner of the building should be so that an object placed there won't ave any paralax motion with respect to the building. I hope this is making sense. I'm hoping if I can mark that point and adjust the camera curves to remove any slip then all other things placed in the scene won't slip either. Please let me know if I've missed something and there is any easy way to do this. :)

  5. Thanks for the comments and suggestions. I'll work on some variations of the head movement to try and make it more natural, for a dragon. I am generally happy with how it turned out, and the kids think it's cool. Luckinly young kids aren't jaded by alll the high quality animation put out by Pixar etc, so it is quite easy to impress them. This is one of the reasons I like working with kids, they llike the level of stuff I am capable of. I expect things will be different with teenagers.

  6. I run a lip-sync music video class at my kids elementary school. I wanted to have an opener, or whatever you call them, like Disney's castle or Dream Works boy in the clouds. What is that short studio ID bit called anyway? The school is called Charles Dickens and our team mascot is the Dicken's Dragon, so I made our video logo with a fire breathing dragon. The compression makes it look a bit rough. You can see it here, 1.4 meg, streams well over highspeed:

I'd like to tweak it and change it a bit for each video, so any comments or suggestions would be appreciated.

  7. It looks to me like you're right clicking the chor, not the camera...

Bingo. That's it. I'd feel really dumb if I wasn't so happy to be making some progress. I was able to get the Voodoo camera data into the A:M camera, but there is a lot of slippage in all directions. I will have to tinker to see if I can figure it out. I gather that matchmoving can be tricky. I'd like to be able to compare using Icarus data. I wonder if my problem with the Icarus import is because the .txt file was created on my Mac. Does anyone have a PC version of Icarus? Ha sanyone ben able to get a good fit with Voodoo data?

  8. Thanks, I'm rather happy with the results. After almost 4 years of struggling with many things in A:M, I found the best way to make a smooth head is to model it in another app, 3ds Max in this case. The head was box modelled, Max has splines too, but I find that starting with a spherized box and adding what I need is much simpler. Sorry for the sour grapes, but I have fought with A:M for almost everything I've done and I finally realized, I'm slow some times, that A:M just doesn't cut it for me. I greatly admire those who can make it work.

Not only does Max do a great job smoothing, but the equivalent of copy flip attach works every time, as does mirror mode, and after 2 weeks of testing Max out and trying all the knobs and dials, it crashed once. I haven't tried rigging and animating a character yet, but I'm really looking forward to it.

I expect this thread to disapear soon, so I'll say see you and the best of luck with whatever you do and whatever app you do it in. Happy animating.

  9. I just finished a lipsync music video done with 4, 10-11 year old kids. It was a lot of fun, but now I'm wondering what to do with all the project files. The entire project is 24.4 gig with all the raw video, images, edits, etc. I'm wondering what you guys do with your finished projects. I need the drive space, and really don't want to burn 34 CDs. I can't run a DVD burned from this computer, it's too slow. I figure I'll just trash them, but wanted to hear what others do.

There is a bit of A:M animation in the background, nothing special, but I used 2 layers of greenscreen to get the effect I wanted. It turned out pretty well. If you are curious, it is hear: format.Sk8erboi

It is 17.4 meg in Sor 3.

  10. The whole concept is very cool and I'm glad that the indy producer potential of a film like Sky Captain is being taked about. However, Spykids 3D was filmed mostly in front of greenscreens and nobody seems to mention it. Just thought I'd point that out.

  11. Well I learned something today. Converting video from DV NTSC to TGA or Animation codec makes a big improvement in the quality. I never would have thought that changing codecs coud improve an image. I assumed that recompressing would alway degrade an image.

It's been an interesting and twisted path getting this done. I download from the camera in imovie, then convert to DVNTSC in QTPro so A:M can read it. Over to the PC for rendering in A:M as TGAs. Next recombining in QT and saving as it turns out as TGA movies. I thought it was best to leave compression to the end so I just save as QT imported the TGAs. Back to the Mac for comping and editing.

Now I'm wondering if I should be putting it in DVNTSC before comping to save space, and possibly render time. Any thoughts? I have to eventually convert to DV stream to get it back in imovie and back to the camera.

I did some tests conversion of the TGA movie to DV and it doesn't look good.

  12. Actually the patch has the ambiance set to 100% and there are no lights in the cho. I'm not really surprised that the A:M image is brighter, although I wouldn't have guessed it. Also, I have tried brightening the image in my video editor, but it didn't look as good as the A:M image.

  13. Hi William. I have tried this in my comp software, but the image is much better coming out of A:M. It is much faster to do it in the comp editor, but it's worth the wait for the A:M render. I do my video comping in Strata Video Sho which is mainly an editor that has basic colourkeying and alpha channel ability. There is some image degridation after each layer is comped, 3 in total, so I want to start with the best possible. I am really wondering why the video quality is so much better coming out of A:M. I would have thought there would some degridation.

  14. Hi. I am working on some more greenscreen video and animation from A:M. My greenscreen wasn't big enough to get the hight I wanted so I figgured out a way to crop the top off in A:M. I used the video as a decal on a patch that only covered the green area, then rendered it with a matching green camera background. It worked really well, but takes about an hour to render 1 minute of video on my 3.2 Ghz P4. Last night I realized I can do the same thing in my video comp sofware by selecting the area above the greenscreen and setting the colour tolerance to max. However, when I put the 2 version of the same clip together in the editor, I noticed that the clip that ran through A:M was significantly clearer and brighter. Now the question is, have I discovered a way of improving poor video images using A:M, or (more likely) am I missing something? The pic below shows the same frame overlapped with the A:M version on the left. Any thoughts?vidframecomp.jpg
