  1. That sounds like it could be an interpolation issue, i.e. you might be using quaternion where maybe (or maybe not) you'd prefer Euler or vector. I haven't untangled all the interpolation stuff in AM yet. The basics are easy enough to understand, but AM seems to let you fiddle with it in many places. It's the 'many places' part that messes me up from time to time. Is there a link to a thorough discussion or tut on all the interpolation options available in AM? A search in the pdf yields a hundred some hits, some of which are very informative, others of which are not.

  2. You might want to take a look at Band-in-a-Box from pgmusic.com. It's not free. Great product. It's quite deep and has a learning curve, but you can generate some nice stuff out of it with very little work. It's helpful if you know some music theory, but not at all necessary. There are a few posts on it here that a search should turn up.

  3. "Should I plop down the $299 or not, and if so why?"

...hmm...should I pay my taxes? Probably a good idea...should I feed my kid? Yea, I guess so...should i buy AM? OF COURSE! What's to think about? :)

Seriously, though. There simply is no better bang for the buck. 3d animation/graphics can be a black hole of dollars. AM gives you the whole shooting match in one package. I thought one of the 'major' apps looked appealing until I reailized I'd have to spend another two grand on plug-in's to get it to do what AM can out of the box.

  4. Spline modeling has a much stronger 'drawing' feel to it than poly modeling. Silo is good at what it does, but if you read the forums you'll see a fair amount of people who say 'they can't get their head around it'. It feels downright clunky compared to AM modeling. Sorry to use the cliche, but modeling in any app takes practice.

Take a look at some of the modeling tuts at the ARM. AM modeling rocks. There's a learning curve to it, but that's true of any modeling app.

  5. The freeware version of Terragen is good for those times when you might want to generate a landscape background pic instead of modeling. Don't have the link handy, but I'm sure a google search would find it in short order.

  6. EXCELLENT!!! Err. (Straightening collar and settling down) I'm thrilled to see Yves joining Hash. At age 45 I think I've used the word "brilliant" twice in my life as part of a description of someone. The second time was in reference to Yves.

  7. Ultimately, that question falls into the category of 'what makes a renderable patch'. "Holes" are not an issue with Hash patches the way they are with polys. Take a look at Frank Silas 'basic splinesmanship' tutorials at the ARM. After that you might wanna take a look at Colin Freemans "Baby Face" tutorial.

  8. You could extrude just the outermost cp's as many times as needed. You won't really need patches on the other side of the cliff anyway, if I understand correctly. I do that sometimes for making buildings if they won't be seen from the back. You could even scale down your last extrusion to 'close' the back of the cliff if you needed those patches for some reason.

  9. It's a fun app, but I wouldn't even call it a competitor to AM. It's good for 'flying logo' stuff and has a nice renderer, but doesn't have the tools for any decent character animation. Also, rigging is just painful and poor.

  10. Hehe. No need to sell me on AM, Rod. I'm a huge fanboy. You should see some of my maniacal defenses of AM on some other boards :) I have a lotta fun with a lot of other apps, too, though. To me it's kinda like musical instruments. I own a few different kinds, but I can only play one or two reasonably well. I still have fun with the others, though.

  11. Yes. I know it "does not export poly models to AM". If I understand correctly they use 2 different modeling types: "The modeling tools found in ETShade consist of bezier curved surfaces with control handles that feel surprisingly like your run-of-the-mill 2D drawing application. The curved surfaces share many of the characteristics of Hash Animation Master, and in fact, you can actually export ETShade curved surfaces directly into an Animation Master file without any modification. To my knowledge, no other 3D modeler nor export application will do this."

BUT (the following is the poly stuff that won't work)

"In addition to curved surfaces ETShade can generate a polygon mesh and then apply subdivision surface techniques for creating smooth surfaces. While ETShade lacks many of the tools associated with a true polygon modeler, it can import DFX, LWO, Shape, Pose, and EPSF files. One interesting caveat, however, polygon based models either created in ETShade or imported from other modelers cannot be exported successfully into Hash Animation Master."

    (the above from Rodneys link)

Sounds like two different modeling algorithms, or am I misunderstanding this? Frankly, it doesn't sound quite clear to me one way or the other.

  12. Cool. Thanks for the info, Ken. It might still be fun to rough in a model with Shade and just add 5 pointers back in AM. If I understand you correctly that might be doable. When you say "...I think they reverse engineered out .SEG files and figured out how to save the control points." I'm hoping that means it currently exports a file that AM 11 can read.

  13. I'm gonna pick up a copy of one version (either the $50 or $150 flavor) anyway just cuz I like to play with different 3d apps if they're not too expensive. Forgetting about the poly export stuff it might be fun to have a second modeling option that exports to AM. Might be fun. Might be a waste of time, but it's cheap enough that I'll give it a whirl.

  14. Ah. Thanks. To be honest, I missed the actual answer to the question the first time. All the verbiage before "One interesting caveat, however, polygon based models either created in ETShade or imported from other modelers cannot be exported successfully into Hash Animation Master." didn't pertain to the question. I think I ended up in reading 'cruise control' and glossed right over it ;)

  15. Has anybody tried export from Shade 7 to AM? Export to AM is available in all 3 versions the publisher is selling. Just went on the market in the US today, I think. Apparently the app has been quite popular in Japan for 17 years. I'd like to think they might have done a decent job of it in that time, although I understand that from a programmers standpoint it's a pretty daunting task.

  16. Well. After playing with Tatoo for a few hours I have a lot of trouble getting consistent results with the import/export end of things. I did get it to work ok with a poly app, but that doesn't help us much. The author says at his forum that "I believe that to develop Tattoo much beyond its current level of functionality (which is actually pretty good in terms of price vs performance) will require a re-write of the core engine." I'll be watching. It's a fun little app.

  17. I have a bunch of music software. My favorite 'fun' app by far, though, is "Band-in-a-Box" (pgmusic.com). Don't know what your threshold for 'low cost' is, but it starts at $88 for first time buyers. There is a demo, I think. It's a very powerful app that belies its corny name. In a nut shell you 'can' click a button and generate a complete tune with 5 or 6 instruments. It includes a decent dxi synth. You don't have to know anything about music, but if you do happen to know some theory you can input a chord progression and the app will generate a melody for you if you want it to. Or you can input your own melody and tell the app to generate a progression around it. It does a surprisingly respectable job of generating listenable stuff. There are almost no copyright issues if you want to distribute something you've created there. Might wanna check their faq on that point, though. Frankly, the feature set is too big to describe much here. Take a look at their web page. At the risk of sounding silly I tell my friends sometimes that 'if I were stuck on a desert island with a laptop and only two apps I'd want them to be AM and Band-in-a-Box'.
