  1. Shame on you, KeeKat, you are slow fellow to render... Hah, just kidding! But it still took quite bit of time to finish...

    Date Completed: Feb 10 2008

    Instructor: Manuals (pdf & video)

Remarks: Great exercise, a dope sheet feels like a great idea although if you are perfectionist you probably are going to spend lot of time with tweaking no matter of what. Seems like I have some problems with bending his fingers smoothly and his eyes are actually coming thru his eyelids. Hmm... Oh well.

  2. Hopefully you aren't having as many difficulties combining shots as you were back in December.

If you are let us know and we'll explore that together.

Combining shots together is absolutely necessary to the animation filmmaker.

Heh, thanks for noticing. Unfortunately I didn't manage to figure it out back then and recently I've been just too busy to get involved with A:M... Indeed, I need to take a closer look on it sooner or later but just now I haven't had time for it yet (and I feel like exploring and doing TaoA:M exercises is priority number one to get the software and workflow familiar).

My approach on combining shots may have been all wrong though. What I did back then was two targa image sequences, one for each shot, and then trying to combine those back in A:M. I actually can't recall what the main problem was but obviously there was some major trouble with it

I really need to give it a try once more :-)

  3. Exercise 7 feels like rendering for ages so meanwhile here's my contribution for the next one:

Remarks: Good and simple stuff, no much to say. What did cause some wondering was lack of detail in model in both wireframe and shaded mode while rendered image was smooth with no cue of harsh angles. However managed to figure out this and was easy to fix by hitting the page-up key couple of times... Also it was nice to notice that it is very easy to remove or add CP's on group selections at any given time.

  4. Phew, life's keeping way too busy. It’s been month by now without any contact on A:M but here goes my latest exercise:

    Name: Petri Pirttinen

Exercise Completed: Exercise 6 - The Door’s Stuck

    Date Completed: Feb 6 2008

    Instructor: Manuals (pdf & video)

Remarks: Very good tutorial on constrains. There's at least one slip in the shot but I'm being just too busy to fix that one right now... I notice the origin of the problem though. Related to that, the right arm twists way over causing funny effects. The suggested 5-second time frame is also pretty tight actually. I tried to cut it down but even still the action takes way too long. I know it's not the main goal of the exercise but would have wanted to succeed :-)

Exercise Completed: Exercise 5 - Take A Walk

    Date Completed: Jan 5 2008

    Instructor: Manuals (pdf & video)

Remarks: How about to make an excercise "how to skate"? It's pretty hard to prevent that sliding. Also it's still somewhat robotic movement but I suppose it's also due to the very short cycle even with secondary motion applied (or I should have exaggerated it more?). Think I'll return to this one later also and this time will want to slow down the cycle a bit too as I think this is a bit too fast - but that's only IMO without further experience that is...

  6. Allrighty then! After a while I decided to make a brief introduction to here after all. I have owned a copy of A:M for few days by now after a long, long time of considering. My profession is product engineering (embedded software and hardware) but apart of that I have always been keen on artistic subjects (photographing, drawing etc). Well, I suppose product designing may come close to that field as well even though at that point my tools of trade at work are mainly pencil, ordinary paper and Corel Draw for that purpose. [Will see if I'll get a copy of A:M there as well after this ;-) ]

3D graphics itself isn't all new to me. Unless we count those grim moments spend with POV-Ray that little modeling experience that I have comes from the use of early versions of 3DS MAX. This was during my polytechnic time and I suppose that since there wasn't any proper courses on it I finally decided to go with embedded designing instead. A good friend of mine however decided to switch the school and today it seems that he's having a lot of fun with 3D'ing in CAVE! (In case you don't know, it's a virtual reality system where you can literally walk inside. Couple of images can be seen e.g. in here: http://www.sgi.com/company_info/newsroom/p...seinajoki.html)

But my goal with A:M is to have fun. And tell a story or two if it just works out. I chose A:M since it did seem to be easy to use (I don't want to spend my precious spare time for too much of learning software) and for second it doesn't cost fortune. But can an engineer become an animator? That's the question that's been always bugging me but I suppose now we are going to find it out! Back to exercises...

    Cheers to all,

    Petri

    Exercise Completed: Exercise 4 - It's a Pitch

    Date Completed: Dec 30 2007

    Instructor: The manual, web tutorial

Remarks: Didn't quite manage it in 1 hour. Even though the "Move It" did seem almost too easy on changing poses this time a lot of tweaking was needed. Once again reference pictures compares to solid gold (for me at least). But now we are really getting into subject!

Initially wanted to make this a two shot scene but had a lot of difficulties with combining those inside A:M. Think I'll return to that later with a little bit of tweaking. Had fun though.

  8. I was thinking a render of the characters without the ground plane and with the Alpha Channel turned on would be ideal.

This would then allow the characters to be composited on different backgrounds.

Thought to make this a private message in case this interferes the flow of the original thread but suppose there's no support for attachments (I can however email it to you if it needs any adjustment, and why not, the whole scene as well if it's for any use).

This goes as a good exercise as well, you know? ;-) I suppose I need to save the render in Targa format to support Alpha Channel? Here's an attachment of such rendering plus the ground plane switched off. Had to zip it as the forum rejected the .TGA extension.

Exercise Completed: Exercise 2 - Chorus Lin

    Date Completed: Dec 26 2007

    Instructor: The manual, web tutorial

Remarks: I always thought that the Knight had one too much... *sigh* The stage misses some textures but I couldn't find them. Also the legs still go a bit funny from time to time (particularly KeeKat!) but this could probably be fixed with a little bit of effort. Reusable actions however simply rocks!
