  1. Here are the steps which I took First I tried applying the plain decale to be painted on, plainer style. Then I opened it via Right click plug in. from which it shows the circular brosh stretching and being distorted as it goes towards the side. so Obviously I dont want that so I try Projection painting and then it still distorts (see attached photos which are in order.

Then I try wrapping the decale around the head spherically and do the same trick and yet it still distores it. Regardless of Oppacity fall off is selected or not.

    Hi Sean,

Using A:M's spherical mapping for such a rather complex head will not give good stamps (especially if you don't tweak the created stamps manually). I you right-click on the decal in the project workspace of A:M and select 'Edit' you can see how A:M maps the decal onto the patches. If you have places on you texture that are mapped to different parts of the model, you will get artifacts in the texture. For example: suppose the cheek and the ear are mapped to a certain region of pixels on the texture by the A:M spherical mapping. Now you want to paint the cheek green. Because the ear is mapped to the same pixels on the texture, the ear will also turn green... I think that's what you are experiencing right now.

BTW, did you try 3DPainter's auto decal mapping tool (see pg 29 of the manual)? It ensures that you won't have any overlapping patches on the texture.

  2. Hi Sean,

The other problem is that if I do one decale and wrap it Sphere wise around it and hit Accept then it stretches the painted markings all over it.

Could you post a screenshot of the decal viewer of that model. Maybe you have overlapping areas or other strange things. Or sending your model to me could also help me find out what goes wrong for you.

BTW, for the head you should also take a look at the options 'Opacity falloff' (paint opacity decreases for parts of the model that face away from the camera), 'Front and Back Side' (paint both front and back-facing parts of the model or not) and 'Only paint visible pixels' (only apply paint to parts of model that are visible).

The other problem is that if I do one decale and wrap it Sphere wise around it and hit Accept then it stretches the painted markings all over it.

This will be solved using the 'Opacity falloff'. Without this option turned on, the paint you apply in front view would also fall on the sides of the model (and thus be stretched out over there). You can see an illustration of the effect of 'Opacity falloff' on page 24 of the manual.

As to the UV set up I looked at all of the settings in the program and it said nothing about a UV set up when I launch it on its own.

As mentioned in the manual, the option to auto-decal the model is only available if the application is launched using the A:M plugin. The reason is that 3DPainter can then instruct A:M to add the stamps etc...

    Best regards,

    Filip

  3. Well, been yrs since ive used AM V11 and looks like V15 out wow!

i stopped for personal reasons and just decided to pop in to have a look and i see some one mention AM: paint

is this something similar in the lines of BodyPaint for cinema4D?

Yes, it's a 3D paint program that loads A:M models. A new update (free for current users) should become available soon. You can see it in action at http://www.3dpainter.com/3DPainter2

  4. at this time, the painter plugin isn't compatible with A:M on Leopard- I beleive Filip is working hard on it-

Yes, some changes were made in A:M15a that caused some plugins to be no longer compatible on Mac OS X Leopard. Steffen Gross helped me making a new version of the 3DPainter plugin that should fix this. It can be downloaded from:

    http://www.3dpainter.com/downloads?file=3DPainterPlugin.zip

This plugin should be copied to the HXT directory in the A:M installation folder.

  5. Note: Surface baking can ONLY bake attributes for which maps exist: Opaque color, specular size/intensity, ambiance intensity, transparency, and bump. Any other material attributes aren't remembered by the baked decal.

Surface Baking creates everything: the decal images and the stamps (UV's). The quote that caused the confusion ("Surface baking can ONLY bake attributes for which maps exist") just says that A:M should support the map type (diffuse color, ambiance, bump...) in order for 'Surface baking' being able to create a map for it as not every surface property can be represented in a map.

Using A:M Paint would be an option but I believe it also requires preexisting image maps.

A:M Paint can create stamps (UV's) and images or it can be used to paint on existing ones.

  6. is okay to have in this folder instead of the hxt folder - or should I redirect the hxt files location under "options"

    Thanks - Eric

You should point 'Extensions (hxt files)' to the 'c:\Program Files\Hash Inc\v14.0\hxt' folder instead of to the 'c:\Program Files\Hash Inc\v14.0\Libraries' folder (and then of course put the 3DPainter plugin in that folder). That's where all plugins are located (including those that are bundled with A:M).

  7. I bought the A:M Painter program - I have version 14 of Animation Master and placed the 3DPainterPlugin_14.hxt file in the "hxt" folder of Animation Master. But when I right click on the modelling window in Animation Master there is not a "3D Painter" option in the pop up menu to open it up directly in AM. I restarted the computer and reopened the program and still no 3D Painter option. Do you know what I am doing wrong? The program opens up and is working fine as a free stading program - so there are no issues there. Thanks - Eric

    Hi Eric,

Did you make sure that this folder is in the list of folders that A:M looks in for HXT plugins? You can verify this by going to 'Options...->Folders->Show Folders for:Extensions (hxt files)'.
