1. :o

Amazing. I was working on a gothic cathedral but it's no where near this good. I might just give up compared to this.

But in case I don't give up ;)

You mentioned "patches" in the thread when it came to the look. I'm still using v8.5. Is that feature available on that version?

Does anyone know of a good tut for patches?

I had honestly thought of making a site with a small tut on the gothic cathedral for us n00bies, but after seeing this...I am truely humbled.

    thanx

  2. I remember seeing a special (Jurassic Park maybe?) where they used the maquette that had been made and digitally imported it in to the software they were using.

sounds feasable enough to me (as input devices go) :)

  3. sorry if I assumed that Posers was being used in the bad context (live and learn)

I think it's so kewl to see this thread still alive and bursting with so many ideas. I feel like such the instigator :P

Having a "new models" link would be kewl. can you imagine some of the random objects that would end up in there?

    looking forward to it :D

  4. well far be it from me to call someone who does animation a "poser". just as there are people out there who specialize in lighting, there are some people who are better animators than model builders, and vice versa.

This thread has been amazing. Thanx to my initial post seeking inspiration, I've had several opportunities for projects and some that might be more challenging than I had dreamed. I wanted to thank everyone who replied for your support and diligence when it comes to born again newbies like myself.

I hope there are other n00bs out there like me who have followed the thread and who have witnessed what this forum has to offer. Sound insight, inspiring ideas and talent galore, on ALL levels in MANY areas (from modeling props and incidentals to lighting and animation).

I can say from first hand experience that if you need help in any area on any topic, you're in good hands here at Hash Forums

  5. If you're curious, read along in the thread under "Animation Master: General Discussion" (I guess)

hi gang. for someone who hadn't touched A:M in a bit, I don't think I'm doing too bad. Here's some of what I've tried my hand at so far.

The helmet was first, in keeping with the request for it and for hats (first of many I hope)

    helmet.jpg

Then there's the night goggles to go with it. I started them but have to detail it all and get the head straps just right (can you tell I've had to wear them in the desert before?)

    night%20goggles.jpg

Then there's the toaster. I started making the classic Sears model, all curved and pretty and all...

    curve%20toaster.jpg

...but then I realized that I had shot myself in the foot by adding too many splines, hence the boolean cutters would ruin it. So I tried it again, much simpler...

    toaster.jpg

the only problem I've run in to is making them chrome...when I add chrome material, they turn black. I put them in a CHOR with some items to reflect and some more lighting, but still nothing.....any suggestions on making good chrome?

Thanx again for such inspiration to all. It's good to be hashing again...so very good!

  7. A virtual collaborative city. What a wonderful idea...Please keep us all informed :) If there's anything I can add to such a project I'd love to. :D

I have to say that I would have to agree with mrsl13. Saying that you can't use a model unless you made it yourself would equate to "if you can't learn to be as good as I am with A:M then you shouldn't do CGI at all". I hope it's not the consensus, especially to born again newbies like me who have other lives to tend to before then can even consider sitting down to make something in A:M just for fun.

If most of the newbies are anything like me, doing CGI is not their source of bread and butter and this is just a hobby that it would be kewl to have showcased somewhere, a la "killer bean" (when we get good at it I guess).

Also, and please take in to account that I'm new at this, props and sets are as important as lighting and main character development aren't they? It doesn't seem fair to trivialize the little things in the background and foreground that make a scene feel right. Like Martin said, a hat can change a character. So too, I would assume, can the props and "incidental" models in a scene. Since I consider myself very much an "average person" and I am as intruguiged at making those trivial models as some are at making a giant space battle (my two cents). :)

After sitting stale for so long, these simple suggestions and well placed support have helped me model that marine helmet, start on the night goggles, mrsl13's toaster (which I'm still working on). So long live the average person :)

Speaking of which, thank you for the info on the toaster mrsl13, but will the model be animated or static? I just want to know if I should create actions for it ahead of time or just go for look

    Thanx again all

  8. hi again, a born again newbie here with a new question:

when I try use copy/flip/attach I sometimes get an area where it seems to...ignore a section (?)

    has anyone had this experience?

    A:M 8.5

    thanx again

  9. ya, I've been meaning to upgrade. with the deals that HASH offers to current owners of A:M it would be a waste not to. I guess as I use this version more and more I will justify myself to buy the latest :)

thanx for the peak idea. that seemed to work.

here's the original image issue (extrude image)

    thanx again

  10. hi listers. trying to extude a perfectly square object, but when I do I get this strange curving effect. any idea why?

    A:M 8.5

    WinXPpro (1.2GHz, 300+MbRAM, 64Mb Vid)

    Thanx ahead of time.

  11. True Rodney, and I still intend to work on the hat Idea. Martin's observation that a hat can change a character really intruiges me, so I intend to pursue it :)

Along those lines, I thought I'd start with Srmjr's first suggestion of a modern marine helmet. Working on it as we speak :)

    thanx again

  12. But it's exactly what I mean. I can't (hopefully) be the only one who's looking for ideas on things to make and it's people who will come along and suggest things that would help.

I'm by no means an expert at modeling, but by getting ideas and trial and error I might at least get good enough at it for people to want to use a model or two.

Practice makes perfect, but you can only make a vase so many times ;)

So hopefully others are reading this and saying "ah ha, I can make that". Not to show me or anyone up, but to get others what they need and maybe even share a technique or two :)

    thanx again

  13. WOW

I had never given that a single thought. How something like a hat can change a character. And then to get that input by someone like Martin Hash himself.

Then I started to think about how many different hats I could think of at once...needless to say I ran out of ideas real quick, which means I have an almost infinite number of ideas to try.

    Thy will be done.

I finally have something tangable to work on, so I'm going to get started on it right away.

I also finally checked out cheesewars and actually laughed out loud. great stuff and good too see someone doing what they enjoy. I remember running accross tripping the rift long ago and look at it now...actually a show on Sci Fi...so I'd love to come up with something to help :)

    Thanx again for your encouragement!

  14. Greetings listers. One of the kewl things I've noticed it that some people make it their business to create wonderful models for others to use. Forgoing their own horns to toot, they take the time to create items that most people won't give much thought to for others to use. The spoon, light switches and lampshades are the goals for some, like me.

I've been calling myself a born again newbie at A:M for some time becuase I simply can't find ideas for things to make. SO, I've decided to be just that. One of the unsung many who make items for others to use. I'm hoping that in doing so I might gain some inspiration of my own to make things for me to use in my own experiements and outlets.

SO...all this to say: what would you like or what do you need?

I've always giggled silently at the idea of the frustrated artist, but being one myself now, I can understand the desolation that it carries with it. you begin to doubt your own abilities, and I can't have that.

So what would you like to see modeled? simple objects, constructed items? what have you.

I'm sure I won't be the only one who appreciates the ideas, and perhaps with different people making the same objects, we can learn from each other...which is after all, the point of these forums :)

thank you for your time and attention

and I look forward to your ideas

  15. Hi forum ghosts... I've seen some nice animated gifs and would like to make some of my own. I've also seen some that are clearly CGI converted. Is there a simple (and possibly free? :P ) way to convert a small animation to an animated GIF? I will also post this question in the FAQ section, since I can't be the only one wondering :) Thanx in advance. Happy Holidays!

  16. ...I was thinking of restarting the project and wanted to get opinions. She has no legs yet and lacks a great deal of detail. The neck would hood out like a cobra (idea I had) but haven't worked out the details yet, so I made a still to see how she would look. Thanx in advance for your opinions more pictures of her here: dragon project

  17. Hi Listers. I have a question. I wanted to animate a Klingon Bird of Prey cloaking and decloaking. It would be easy enough to just mess wih the transparency setting during certain key frames. However...y do it the easy way :) If you've never seen the effect, the cloaking effect has what looks like watery volumetrics working over it when it happens, then it vanishes in to nothing. So, my question is, there are plenty of tuts out there to make water but can you apply something like that "watery" effect to a transparent (maybe glass?) material and apply it to a shape (the Bird of Prey) to give it that effect.... ...whew! no small task huh? well, since I'm basically a n00b becuase I haven't produced anything substantial yet, any SIMPLE and BASIC help would be great. Thanx in advance. From what I understand, I'm in the right place to learn a great deal. Thanx again!

  18. Political Correctness strikes again.... ...people, do what you can to stop this liberal nightmare trend. If someone is short, does calling them "vertically challenged" make them taller? NO, it does not. It makes us feel better about not doing a damn thing about thier shortness... ..what can you do? if it's short, say so. if it's fat, say so. if it's something, identify it... ...what no one seems to remember is that with the ACLU and NAACP fighting for the stupidest things...NO WHERE in the constitution (which people use to hide behind) does it say "you have the RIGHT to not be offended" ...nuff said

  19. actually, going back to the Star Trek comment about "number one". In the first episode, she WAS a girl :) just some useless factoid for fun

I for one will wait until I see it to make a call on it.

If it's anything like the dune mini's they made, we'll be fine :)

and before anyone decides to start hating the sci fi for "messing with the original", remember that the actor who played Apollo has been spearheading the "new" Galactica for years and may very well be behind a good deal of it. If he's kewl with it, can't we be?
