First 1/2 in varying state.....

It works for "Makehuman" models to - but, depending on the polygon density can be more trouble than it is worth. If you are an adept modeller, Re-topology would be much quicker.

The laptop is behaving again so back into it.
Wow, this is turning into an epic...... In all I think I will have 6 scenes. I have completed the first 3 scenes plus most of the sword fight scene (but I keep going back to tweak the animation after final rendering - will I ever finish?) and it's only 40 seconds of animation but 30 hours of rendering (not including the fight scene) using netrender and 4 rendering nodes so far..... I think this is going to end up being a couple of minutes long and I will have to give myself a full week to render it our then a couple of days to cut in the sound.

So growing the community talent pool is in effect the start of any possible larger project IMHO.
Absolutely.
But there in lies Martins genius when he came up with TWO. Aside from those who have special projects, the rest of us have no real means of growing our talent without a project to cling to! The whole purpose of the TWO project was to grow talent - I believe SO was then an attempt to see what that grown talent could produce (I think we would all agree that SO was an order of magnitude better than TWO)
I think Martin only chose a feature because there was so much interest from the community that a feature sized film would be needed to give everyone a go and doing a reasonable amount of work on no matter what level of skill they had. In the end it took so long for TWO to get through it's pre-production that many people became disillusioned and disappeared, leaving the project to be completed by a handful of people who stuck it out.

I got it working. I uninstalled everything to do with 3DConnexions and also a 3DConnexion Emulation driver. I then reinstalled everything and it is now working like a bought one

Success or failure of a community project is going to be based on 5 things;
1. A project that has a wide appeal in Subject and style
2. A project that has realistic objectives (aimed at the average community members ability and available time)
3. Has a single point of Direction
4. Has a single point of Organisation (can and should be different to the "Director")
5. KISS
(6. Director and Organiser who get along - somewhat of an issue in the early days of TWO)
If all these things are in place the project will get swamped with help at the start and interest WILL dwindle with time. At the end of 3 years on TWO there might have been 3-4 people still involved and a similar number at the end of 2+ years for SO (well really just 1 in the end). BUT note that it does not have to be the same people involved from start to finish. If the project is kept simple and straightforward then different people can step up as required when real life pulls people out of the project at different times. (I myself did no more than a few 2 month stints at a time on TWO and SO - in and out to keep myself from going bonkers)
The other lesson (from a project managers perspective) - make sure that there is stuff for people to do when there is most interest in the project. ie the project has to be up and running very fast - all artistic decisions made etc, script done and dusted otherwise you will lose at least 50% of your starters who just don't want to hang around OR have nothing better to do with their time than make 'suggested' improvements (then argue about those suggestions if/when rejected) because they have nothing else to do and their creative juices are flowing fast!
TWO and SO were eye openers for me and I saw a lot of the goings on that most were not privvy to.
Also, find out what 'other' skills people have - ie non artistic as you will want to utilise people 'real life' expertise as well.

No - they are all set to active..... The Tilt, Roll and Spin simply move the 3D Space in Z, Z and Y directions respectively. I can't even get the thing to work as a 2D mouse in the default Windows Explorer!
What is the xml file for?
-
So I installed it and I can only get the move in 3 axis (X, Y, Z) to work. ie no tilt, roll or spin. Any suggestions?
-
Pledged. Will probably increase it toward the end of the month (depending on my account balance at that time )

Thanks Simon. Your workaround is ideal for those of us with Windows and locales/fonts that Windows does not fully cater for. Its a known issue for the MS Color Picker. Anything but MS Sans Serif as a system font causes it to fail. My locale (regional settings) defaults the system font to Sergoe UI. Doing a regedit to set the FontSubstitute/MS Shell Dlg and MS Shell Dlg 2 fonts from Sergoe UI to MS Sans Serif has fixed the problem.

My view is...... a few of us (well at least me) do have have the ability to tell a story. We have the technical abilities to do various 3d type tasks (modelling, rigging, texturing, animating) to varying degrees of success and if we want to see a film, we need to tack onto a community project otherwise we just dabble and play and generally achieve very little.

Oh - yes, of course - Yes that worked. The defect is in the color picker itself (ie when you double click on the diffuse color or other color) but at least AM has an alternative method of entry. Many thanks.
-
OK, the issue may have something to do with the Windows default font (ie what the system uses). Anyone know how to change the default font in Windows 7?
Edit: Copy and Paste won't work in the field either!

My laptop is running its default resolution with default display driver. Its a known problem but MS don't appear to want to do anything about it (perhaps why few , if any, other applications use it). There is a posted solution but it requires a hack to the MS Common dialogue control dll - that's a bit beyond my skillset.
-
The colour pickers in Adobe, Paint.Net and Gimp do not have this problem BUT the picker in MS Windows Paint does have the same problem! So any suggestions on how to overcome the problem?
-
So it overrides what AM does to the axis?
-
The fields contain 3 digit values - it just won't let me enter (via the keyboard) more than 2 digits. I've tried the backspace and delete keys in combination a number of times to ensure I have cleared everything out of the boxes......
-
I raised this last time I used AM and got nowhere. The 3DConnexion *standard* axis for Spin and Roll are swapped in AM. Last time I raised this (years ago) I was told this was what certain AM users wanted and it wouldn't change. Would a request to add a user option to use the 3DConnexion *default* axis be considered?

Windows 7 64 Bit Home - 32 and 64 bit versions of AM 16 and 17- every time/case. (Existing and new models and patches)
-
Seems that the AM colour picker does not allow for entry of the full range available apps (Paint.net, Photoshop, Gimp etc) or it uses its own scale. The colour I want is R 209, G 154, B 98 but do you think AM will let me enter 209 - No. So what do I do to try to match colours?
Actually it looks like a defect with the colour picker value entry fields - they restrict users to 2 digits only....

It's back. I'll have to wait till I get home to put the air compressor through the multiple fan ports to blow out the dust. Enough dust came out when I blew into them with my own breath!

After a night of rendering just the opening scene, my Laptop (Toshiba Qosmio) seems to have died..... It was locked up and too hot to touch. I pulled the power and let it cool but it won't restart. I does appear to be now able to run a startup repair though - running for 20 minutes so far, HD light is flashing so it's doing something! Hopefully I won't have lost everything!

My subscription is about to expire and I've begun to think of all of the reasons I should resubscribe.
While plunking down $79 for another year of A:M is really a no-brainer (of course I should)... maybe... just maybe... I should consider the reasons I have to resubscribe.
So... help me out here guys/gals.
Give me a reason (or ten) to resubscribe.
Actually You should buy about five, one for the office, one for home, one for the laptop, one for the undecided cousin and one just to keep Hash in business, until next Year...
For that many licenses you would be better off with the DVD....

Yep - they are locked until I get the rest right. Once the rest is right I can move them about. I just needed to make sure I had the models locked in space so when I put the rest of the set in they didn't 'wander'/'drift'.
OK, since the sword fight worked out so well (for me anyway) I started to think about building a "story" around it so working up a storyboard using A:M chor and models/sets. Here are a few renders so far (without giving anything away) I should point out that the story line is not original..... I'm not that creative - but it is a variation on a theme
Animation Contest - Entry 2 - Pirates

LOL - no hair but I may give her a bandana to 'hide' the fact that she has no hair The final render will take care of 'hiding' the pirate in that last shot until he steps forward out of the shadows. Gloria getting up off the pile of sacks still doesn't look right either. Something just isn't quite right and I haven't worked out what it is yet.
OK, on to Scene 4 shot 2.... I'm really just winging it at present. I have an idea what I want each scene to 'achieve' but just setting up poses in a single frame that 'says' what I want the scene to say (or just looks OK) then 'tweening' them to fit together (working backwards in some cases - I know about animating straight ahead - but how about straight behind it's an interesting exercise.....)
