Absolutely a Terrific tree Model ! Wonderful character -
like the idea of texturing - but feel like the texture needs more depth to suggest something more "barky" - maybe add a bump map for deeper darker, more defined creases in the texture..

Hi Vern - i can't say I've ever experienced a 5-10 min delay in posting - forum does get bogged down - however I can say I sure hope that what ever is stopping you from posting gets fixed -PRONTO -
Your posts are the highlights of my lurking adventures here.
Perhaps you have tooo many admirers? you know reading your stuff while you're posting? I don't really think thats the cause - but maybe it is connected in some other way?

thanks for the comments y'all -
Robcat: Yes the yarn is an image map - I'll give some thought about "unsquaring" the ends. I was thinking originally of going for the look of cut yarn - as if to suggest someone had actually "sewn/knit him up"... might try using two image maps for emitters so that the strands don't look so regular
Johnl: Yes I'm starting to animate him - using dynamics so that the hair moves, as well as giving the red tie dynamic constraints as well - might have some tests to show manana - so far render times have been reasonable (20-30 secs/frame at 640x480) ...
Still having problems with grooming - very tricky, scary, tedious - the old adage of 80% of the work takes place in 20% of the time is turning out to be very true of course...it's that remaining tweaky stuff that drives me crazy -
-
Needs mucho work - but I like the way it's progressing. Been playing around with creating a model with hair, and trying to get something that might have reasonable rendering times for animation - - so I've been keeping the density low (lower than I'd really like) -
And hoo-Boy have I been struggling with the grooming (yikes what a spaghetti nest of string!), resorted to fakey lighting, shadows, 1 pass, etc... BUT this image at 640 x480 rendered in 37 secs! I could live with that...(I'm really really impatient)
Will be working on cleaning up the face (too confusing - image wise) - fixing the bald spots...
comments welcome

Well Beam me up Shaggy Boy !!
I always think there's a use for the stuff you do (well... almost always).
So just what are you doing there? I like the effect.

I have noticed (for last couple of days?) that the "View New Posts" is working differently for me. I like the old way better.
What seems to be happening is that if I leave the forums by just shutting down the window before reading all the "new posts" (because I can't stand waiting forever when the forum starts to bog down), that the posts that had been in my "new since last visit" get marked to having been read automatically. That means that the next time I come back and hit the "view new posts" - I don't get to see the ones I didn't get to in the previous visit.
The old way required me to hit the "mark all posts as having been read", so that when I returned to the forum, I would be insured of the opportunity to read every pearl & nugget of shiny, immeasurable wisdom spewed forth (not talking about the rants)
bring back the old ways, please... or at least tell me I'm a ninny and have some setting wrong

I love the drip - beautiful reflections, colors, nice composition, interesting to look at -
one thing that bothers me is that the end of the brush with the paint on it (where there is no paint) needs to have a more "bristley" look to be more consistent with the rest of the brush -
also there's something funny about how perfect the concentric circles in the paint are - would prefer to see it slightly less regular, maybe slightly off center ?-
nice work

Thanks so much John for investigating, at least I know it's not just me - I also came to the conclusion of doing the same workaround for controlling length of hair in a non-linear fashion
-
Hi John - I downloaded your project & cornc.mov - and was playing around with it - I found I was not able to set the frame number for the cornc.mov movie (or even a simple tga sequence) so that I could choose the length of the hair in a fashion other than straight thru from beginning to end.
In other words, I found that I could animate a regular "color" decal (using either a movie, or tga sequence) and could select the frame # in any order I wanted. eg frame no# 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 10, 3, 2, 1 of the movie etc and it would play fine. However when i tried to animate the sequence and use it as a property controlling the length of the hair that the animation (eg cornc.mov) would only play from start to end - could never get it to go in reverse or out of sequence - it would just stay on the last frame - Have you had any luck with doing this for hair?
-
That's fantastic John! - I love it - I've always wanted to do some "growth" type thingies - thanks for all your ideas (again & again - you provide inspiration)
-
Excellent transition, works really well - also love the colored lights - How are you doing that

No one has a cuter picture than I do in my profile.... so blah!
HAH! You obviously haven't seen mine. And nooooooo, I am not going to put my birthdate in, not in a million ba-gazillion years...
However, for really useless personal data, and to embarass myself further, I will say that my great grandmother's name was America Hash - I am not making this up (she was married to Lewis Ward) from Grayson Co. VA - her father was Joseph "Rhymer Joe" Hash (also Grayson Co.), His father was Joseph Sr. Hash, son of William Horton Hash, son of Old John Hash - I JUST KNOW I must be related somehow to all the little Hashlets running around up there in Vancouver....I'm so proud.

Hi - I did some very stylized "2d style" animations using AM a while back:

Obviously all is possible with AM...

In 10.5r - I am able to drag and drop relationships from 1 model to another - this creates a pose slider - do not know if 11 still lets you do this - I think this what you're after

Do you happen to know how to turn the surface transparent without turning the hair transparent along with it?
What I did to accomplish this was to create a small .tga (eg 100 x 100 pixels) that was all alpha channel - ie contained no image - and then assigned that image file to those groups that I wanted to be transparent. Eg. Select the group(s), rt click, select add image - patch is now invisible. This way I could still use the properties of the patch to control how the emitter looked (via decal, or color etc), but not have the patch show

XP
in (2003-2004)
ummmm, errr.... I hate to ask this question (very very afraid of the answer), but it seems like this is the thread to include it in - I too am thinking of jumping to xp pro from 98se (and get a new p4 3.0)
Does anyone know if there are problems, or has experienced problems with using older versions of other essential software programs? will I have to upgrade those as well (ugh) to the latest version ? - In particular I am concerned most with photoshop 6.0, aftereffects 4.1, premiere 6.0, painter 6, dreamweaver 4, flash 5, illustrator 8. Of course I can try to find out from adobe, macromedia, corel, etc (we know what they'd like me to do) - but thought I might try here first to find out what others have experienced ...

hi - flat shaded on/off is found under the properties for the model under the Options section (same place as front projection target, cast reflections, cast/receive shadows, etc)

--I just used Windows Media Encoder 9 (free from Microsoft). Unfortunately,
it only spits out .wmv movies, so I need to find a converter to go
cross-platform for all my "Mac Friends" *snicker* out there.
Hi - loved your tut - & was intrigued by using the free windows media encoder
I too am investigating codecs compatible with macs and went to the microsoft site and it appears to me that they have a player that is for osx and plays the wmv (with ver9) - am I missing something? - very possible as I am very very ignorant of all the different mac os'es/configs/versions etc

that is one super gorgeous caterpillar - and wonderful motion - love the coloring, and modeling - very appealing
-
good, fun stuff - excellent mood - draws me in and makes me want to know more about what happens next...
-
very beautiful image - very painterly, excellent texture - only critique I would have is that the image is a bit too symmetric - would prefer the "lens flare/simulated sun" position to be lower (nearer to mountain edge) and more to the right, with the additional effects streaming to the left... Goooooood job! and thanks for posting the project - nancy

Hi -
(Disclaimer: I always prefer stylized, expressionistic or impressionistic images so take the following as a subjective opinion on the backdrop)
I actually prefer the oddness of the first backdrop to the second, as it seems more interesting. By oddness I mean the unexpected color - it casts a different mood & suggests a different time of day, (but with perhaps a bit of unwanted pollution in the air?). The blue gradient backdrop suggests a happy, noon time, but is almost a cliche. Perhaps a tad bit more purple? turquoise jewel? in the blue to keep it happy, rather than the greenish cast as in the first eg.
like I said - just a personal biased opinion - and only you know the mood you want to create - Nancy

namely, if I import an 8.5 model into a project, then every subsequent time I open the project,:
2) The first time I do a "Save" operation, it pops up a "Save As" dialog.
I kind of liked that - reminded me to save my model under a different name for ver 11, or 10.5, in case I wanted to go back to 8.5

Perhaps inside of mouth should suggest "growth rings", and teeth might have touches of fuzzy green moss (from not brushing properly? - ewwww yucky)
