  1. Yes! I got it to work on Macs and PCs!

The first thing is to make sure both your Macs and PCs "see" one another in the network. I have old, g3, g4 and a few less than 1 ghz pcs. If they can't see they can't render. To be honest, the pc setup was a breeze, the mac requires some tweaking here and there. But it worked.

Does NetRender work so that you save a project and then dump into a shared folder and then the machines work out rendering the frames between them?

Yes. It's really easy once it's set up. It saves the files as a sequenced .tga. You'll definitely need QuicktimePRO or other to assemble the image sequences together. Also, if one of the machines fail, another one will take its place (very borg like).

    ...NetRender...

    ......bliss...

  2. ;) I'm toiling over the same thing right now. I've asked myself, which is the most important thing for me - faster rendering or faster modelling and production. It is difficult. There's always something coming out that's faster and sometimes is better.

Since it's a financial decision for me, I always look at ROI. The return on investment, whether that's personal joy or monetary wealth. At the moment, until I get a nice plum project, I most likely will not buy a new 3 ghz computer with 2 gb of ram and a 250 GB harddrive...sigh...but it's always nice to dream.

Since working with AM, I noticed that rendering time will tie up my computer and eat up a lot of time and processing power. I bought NetRender and all the old macs and pcs I have are on a network rendering my files. It's bliss. What use to take 1.5 hours, takes 8 minutes.

  3. ooowaaaahh!

Shaun, I must say that is waay out there. Very nice indeed. In terms of lighting, I wholeheartedly agree, I've been experimenting with John Henderson's SkyCast and the results are quite good. Actually, I found out about SkyCast from your site!

Can't wait to see the final piece.

  4. :D Hey Gerry, nice work!

I use QuickTime Pro for my compression. If anyone has any pointers for compressing a Windows version smaller than what I've got I would really appreciate hearing it.

Dunno if you've tried it, but FlashMX has a video import from Quicktime that gives you more granular control on the compression. It uses the Sorenson algorithm and it worked pretty good for my newbie project in AM. For example, my first animation since picking up AM about a week or so ago cut the file size in half using Flash MX. It outputs as a .swf file and naturally can play embedded with a browser that has Flash installed which is almost all major browsers. Depending on how much clarity you want, it might just work out.

Try it out and good luck!

  5. I checked out the demos. Quite nice indeed. I just bought AM this week and can see so much has been done with the program. I've seen some really exceptional work and Skycast refines the rendering to another level.

    I downloaded the trial/freebie and it's, it's...very cool!

I have yet to make anything with AM resembling something decent, but I'm going to try out Skycast. The demo he has is also very helpful.
