  1. Not to start a flame war, or anything like that, but will Stephen be able to do a Mac version of v17? I know he had some issues with the last version of Xcode, but with the release of the 4.2.1 is everything ok?

  2. Glad to see you've resolved the problem.

Ah, I haven't quite solved the problem yet as these render can attest. The first couple of times it worked but it did not look exactly right so I tried moving the light, stripping the wave generators down to one and placing it in the middle, I even played with the gamma, but only when I scrub the output in Quicktime can I barely see the waves.

    leaves1.mov leaves3.mov leaves4.mov leaves5.mov

  3. You are correct. In the brighter left-hand side I see the waves on the outside of the backing, against the blue. In the darker right-hand I also see the waves, but this time over the leaves.

    What is gamma?

  4. Nancy I am sorry but I still don't see it. I downloaded the project file I uploaded earlier and made the changes you directed. But I still don't see the waves. I am uploaded the file again. Please compare it to yours and see if you can find any difference. Thanks.

  5. Things could be worse. I'm sure Truespace users thought they were safe when Microsoft bought it, but then it turned around and pulled the plug last year.

That is so typical of Microsoft - NO flames please - Apple is known to start something and abandon it for no reason other than possibly Steve changes his mind or gets peeved at it.

  6. Example: When Ken Baer left... a whole section of Mac Users left with him because 'they could not see' the future of Mac support for A:M. After all, wasn't Ken the only one who could code for the Mac in A:M? Don't get me wrong. Ken's a great guy. He brought me into the A:M Forum as a moderator... and he is missed... but who can keep programmers working where there isn't sufficient support for them? What Ken Baer put into A:M speaks for itself and remains his legacy. He was a part of CG history with A:M. Perhaps after he retires from the work-a-day world he'll be able to return again.

I had the pleasure of meeting Ken Baer at a Macworld (back when dinosaurs roamed the earth ;) ) As for Mac users panicking when he left I can sort of see this because at that time wasn't Apple still using Motorola chips? If so, it would have required a different programming skill set. Now that Apple is using the Intel chip, and a compiler translate high level code into machine language, as some one said earlier, the code base is basically the same, just the system calls are different (save/open etc.)

Yes, if there were five programmers still taking care of Animation:Master I can't even imagine what the program could do. Probably you just dictate into a microphone how you wanted to draw an object and the program would do it. Sort of like StarTrek.

  7. That is too bad about not going to Macworld Expo any more. That is where I bought my first copy of Animation:Master. I had the pleasure of meeting Ken Bear. I still have (somewhere) an old *HASH* olive drab tee shirt that came free with the program.

Live demonstrations are great but nothing beats a good Users Manual. That is why I still have Jeff Paries and David Rogers books. I even have a 2000 Hash produced manual. Might I humbly suggest that some funds be diverted to a good tech writer. From personal experience I quickly found that it wasn't as easy as Steve Sappington's two minute demonstration once I got home.

  8. I am still hoping to hear about Slave upgrades for Netrender. If these could be dedicated (and sent) to Steffen that would be great.

Can you clarify what you are hoping to hear concerning the Slave upgrades for Netrender?

Also, I understand obtaining this information is a condition of purchasing additional licenses? You need that information in order to make a purchasing decision?

If that is the case, Steffen has already expressed here in the forum that he has nothing to do with licensing.

For licensing options you'd have to contact Hash Inc.

Support-wise for v17... you just login to the Hash store and purchase another subscription.

I understand that Steffen has nothing to do with licensing - Jason controls that. And yes, knowing what the delta cost for more Render Slaves would be nice to know. I have looked on the Hash website and see nothing yet.

  9. Bubba,

Everyone wishing to see A:M prosper and Steffen Gross be properly compensated for his effort is free to show their support by purchasing additional licenses. Add a comment when you purchase, "This one's for you and your Mac support Steffen. Thanks!"
