Heat Distortion

I'm looking to create the heat distortion you get from jet blasts.

I have some ideas about doing it in post production in After Efects or frame by frame in photoshop.

Has any one done this yet? And how was it done?

Thank you,

Camillo

I would do this in post production.

You could do it in A:M, but the distortion would require refraction to be rendered and that will be a big render time hit.

So what you need to create to do this in post is something to be used as a selection set.

You could render one pass as color.

then in a second render you could put geometry where the distortion trail should be by using tube models for the exhaust area.

render everything black, but the distortion tubes in pure white.

then use this as a selection set in your post program.

Ofcourse this is just a very simple explanation and it would require some planning if the distortion trail will move behind objects and stuff like that.

just to amplify on Mike's comments...

you could have your jet emit particles, render those as a separate pass with everything else black and use that pass to controll bluriness/distortion created in a compositing program like after effects and applied to your main image pass.

Particles because those would have a changing nature to them that a solid shape would not.

if you could make fuzzy edged, clear, refracting particles (the new V15 water?) you might be able to do it in all A:M. Not sure how to make fuzzy edged water tho.

Thanks Mike.

Looks like no one else could answer that one.

I'll figure something out, because I don't let go until I do.

Some day I'll post in WIP and let you know what I did.

<_>

Well, thats because doing this in post production is the way one would do this.

I did just this on a demo reel that I made a few years back. Its of a jet flying over water, with the heat trail done with

the above mentioned technique. Once I had the selection set, I added a grain filter, a swirl filter and then a blur filter.

If you want to see the piece, its at the tail end of my old demo reel found here

Thanks for the replys,

Doing some tests in After effects I think I will be able to get what I want.

After I get some refining done I'll post in WIP.

I'm using particles and dust along with heat distortian on a landing craft as it touches down.

I want to push myself beyond my current skills. That's the only way to improve.

Now I just have to get bussy and pull it all together.

Thanks Again;
