The whole idea of concept work is that 99% of it ends up in the trash bin or in some making of video or book after the movie is made.
Good idea, Frank. Let's always keep in mind that our collected development material may be the only thing that brings any money in from the movie because many aspiring filmmakers will want to buy the "How to do it" book.

The last few posts of this thread were deleted for clarity. Sydney Cuthbert's (el syd) dialog changes have been incorporated into the V5 script, which can be found in the first message.

Jeff;
Your donation of those beautiful models makes me proud of our community. I personally LOVE Dr. Suess AND Scooby Doo. Send them off to Paul too. (Remember to rename and change the color of anything that is copyrighted).
Sincerely,
Martin Hash

Excellent. Nice camera angles. Nice color scheme. Timing good. Could make it longer and build onto the joke for film festival length.

Art Nouveau style Tin Man. Just something different.
You know, Rich, I've been wanting TIN WOODMAN to be run by steam, but your drawing has almost convinced me otherwise. (I want TIN GIRL to be run by a wind-up). That is very inspiring.

If we do this on the 1 end of the scale I think it would die of quaintness.
I think I'm pretty good about recognizing a niche. Yeah, Dreamworks or Pixar could never get away with quaitness, but their bar is much, much higher. I think we can deliver a product that fits perfectly into some niche that the other guys would never even consider. Whether TWO will be "quaint," I don't know - but don't dismiss it out of hand; quaintness may have a market,

Martin what, if any, strategy do you have for getting the skills of the members of the general forum up to scratch? Is the idea to get the Directors to do all the mentoring/training or do you see it falling on the community at large via say the Bootcamp(s) to get people up to a certain level before they start actual participation (modelling/animating etc) or are we just going to wing it?
I'd say one of Rodney's "A:M Certificate of Completion" will do, but so would a journeyman piece. This is for any job, not just animation. So, if someone wants to model: certificate required, animate: certificate required, TD: certificate required. If you're going the journeyman piece route, then be prepared to show it publicly.

The goal of the "Hash Movie Project" is to eventually include ALL members of the Animation:Master community. When I floated this idea to the Fellows, they split into two camps: 1) committees don't work! 2) Committees DO work! (I'm a #2). In consideration of both sides, we decided to expand to the community in tiers. When you volunteer for a particular job, you will be given posting access to the "Hash Movie Project" forum topic.
So far:
1) First (starting a couple of months ago), there were discussions in the Fellows "Private" area where the script and directors were chosen.
2) Recently, the "Hash Movie Project" topic was created, which is readable by all but right now is postable only by directors.
Go ahead and make suggestions or post your own designs here: I read them.

It may be easier to choose the personalities and voices, once some visuals of the characters are determined. Are there any character designs yet?
An obvious "chicken or egg" problem. I think the character designs will go a lot easier if we had personalities.

Changed the script so that WOOT takes a LOON skin. See the YOOP CASTLE escape to see how it's used.
-
I'm still for a prop rather than a "lesson," to connect the two scenes, (even though a "lesson" does seem more intellectually satisfying).
A prop that plays a big part in the LOONS scene is the thorn. The audience knows WOOT has it, and we could end the LOONS scene with him brandishing it at the LOONS in his anger at being poked, (keeping the "perforate" line - I think the word "perforate" is inherently funny).
But how do we use it in YOOP'S CASTLE?
-
Yves idea for tricking Mrs. Yoop by flattering her pride makes a better connection to the Loon episode....
flattery = pride?
That connection is very tenuous. It certainly is not demonstrated anywhere else in the script. Would someone watching the movie really make the connection that BEAR flattering MRS. YOOP to get her to do something is somehow connected to the LOONS? The air pump and the use of the word "perforate" is a clear connection.
(I do think we should show that there are multiple air pumps used on BIG LOON so that taking one will not hurt them).

Peter;
Hmm... I'd like to read the whole script (or a big part of it) with similar changes. I know it would be some work for you, and I can't promise we'd use it (Fellows vote), but if you've got the time...
-
Peter;
We want to keep the "poetry" of the original dialog, and we want to say this is an "L. Frank Baum" story. Can you rewrite a few more pages without modernizing it so much?
-
Here is version 5 of the script, "The Tin Woodman of Oz." It has been abridged from the book and changed to add a story arc, and a character arc for Tin Woodman. A new character has been added, "Tin Girl," to support the new arcs. We are going to use the classic dialog but it is still open for polish. Total running length will probably be about an hour.
The script is not finalized.
edit 5/4/5
The LOONS scene has been changed to include a connection to the YOOP CASTLE escape.
edit 5/5/5
The LOONS scene has been changed so that WOOT takes an empty LOON skin with him. Also see the changes in YOOP CASTLE where MRS. YOOP is woken up by the sound of someone blowing air into a balloon, then is startled by a GIANT LOON.
edit 5/29/05
Incorporated Sydney Cuthbert's dialog changes.
edit 9/23/05
Incorporated Peter Shafer's "script tightening" suggestions.
edit 9/30/05
Trimmed the dialog, per Robert Taylor. Added reference to Ozma early in the script.

We're exploring a whole new way to market Animation:Master. The days of feature comparisons and price wars are over. This is a mature market: now it's time to identify, "What can Animation:Master do for you?"
The goals are to differentiate A:M with respect to Maya for existing 3Dists, and to have a clear vision for people for whom A:M is their first introduction to 3D (most customers).
This is one of the major reasons we are sponsoring the "Hash Movie Project." Most 3Dists will never get a chance to work on a movie, and most beginners want to work on a movie, so we will provide that opportunity. "A:M Community" will be expanded to work on group projects. A website will publicize the progress of the movie for potential customers, and allow any A:M customer to get involved.
Our sales pitch will remain the same, except we will end with: "Learn to make a movie by being involved in making a movie with Animation:Master."
Currently, the A:M Fellows are getting this project set up, but it will go "live" by the end of the year.

It's good to see you back in action.
