1. Stian,

My hat is off. I cannot find even a hint of a spline, after comparing your wire frames to your AO renders! You are one "smooth" dude. B)

My hat is also off to the folks at HASH. You say you have AO set too the defaults. Beaitifull renders, even without materials or color.

BTW, checked out your demo reel. Very sweet! Loved the spinning AO and IBL renders.

    Cheers,

    Rob

  2. Stian,

    Still just amazed.

Would love to see a wire of your float plane.

Quick question, the lines for the masts, are they 'render as lines' or are they actual geometry?

    Good Stuff,

    Rob

  3. Hey Scott,

Really cool man! Love the lionfish! Not very many of us still using good ol' v10.5. I just bought v13, but I'm holding off loading until I can finish a little bathroom radiosity project that I started over a year ago. Sorry to here your computer whoes :( . Been there, done that. Glad your back up and running. Sounds like you have limited time, I understand that too.

I post this picture with the utmost humblenees, along with this offer. This is a forgotten project of mine from 2003 that I will never do anything with. It was to be an entry into the stereo contest if I could have made it work, I just didn't have time. And so, like so many of my projects it just sits on my hard drive waiting for a good home. There are (4) fish and (5) different sea plants. I modelled them from a painting, don't even know if they really exist. They aren't as good as what you're getting into, but if you'd like I'll email the project to you, for your use. You're welcome to it, my gift. Don't see very many folks modelling sealife of late.

  4. also added an shaded/wire of some of the lifeboats and hangars, not very interesting though

    Stian,

Actually, your wire frames are quite interesting and most helpful. I always like to see how the "mechanical masters" solve mechanical issues. You do a great job of softening edges without over modelling, as well as modelling complex surfaces without losing that smooth machined look. I've been working at this for years, with limited success, so any insight into how you go about splining is a pleasure to see. Post them anytime, no matter how big or small. ;)

    Thanks and peace,

    Rob

  5. Absolutely amazing! For the life of me, I can't figure out how you could be modelling this so fast and yet so smooth. Do you have some method of mechanical modelling you might wish to share? Do you use Yves' "peak and tweak" method or the Roger Reynolds method?

    Cheers,

    Rob

  6. Congrats! Love the storyline and composition.

I'm glad you gave us the background, I would have guessed him to be a high tech assasin that just stirred up the cat.

Your lighting is dead on. The highlights in the stair railing and POPBOT's wall shadow. WOW!

I am also digging that metal material on his guts. I have got to update my A:M if for no other reason, just for the soft reflections.

    Thats great stuff.

  7. Hey guys, I talked to my wife about swapping. She said no way, she is not into that....and I can't use her video card either. Oh well. If you guys say the card should be okay, well I'd better do some more hunting. So I started doing what you guys suggested(uninstall, new drivers, I even updated Windows 2k...). No change. So I did something I hadn't tried. I went back to AMv8.5 and would you believe it worked great. Next I tried AMv9.5 and that one is working fine also. Back to v10.5....curses, still the same. Well in the older versions I finally remembered changing the number of polygons per patch for realtime render from (4) to adaptive. I never could find that same setting for AM10.5........until an hour ago. My card now works fine and you guys have saved me $200 or so dollars. :D Thanks for your support and a shout out to Roger Reynolds also for starting me on this road, Rob Shematek

  8. Hey everyone, Okay, hope you guys aren't getting tired of video card questions. I am running a PC Windows 2000 with AM10.5o, P4 1.7G, 512M RDRAM, and a Nvidia Quadro2 vid card. Here is the first problem. The card works fine except in realtime render. I have tried everything I know(updated drivers, opengl, directx....) and AM still looks better in shaded mode on my wife's old machine(ATI RIVA TNT2 16mb). Here is the second problem. I am not made of money. I have a budget of about $200 for a new card. I am not a big gamer, I do run AutoCA.....oops, but all I really care about is being able to see good shading in AM( I am really trying to hone on my modelling skills). I am sick of tweak and render...tweak and render...tweak and render....... I looked at Steve Sappington's performance stuff and quite frankly its pretty much greek. I would really appreciate some advice. Thanks in advance, Rob Shematek

  9. Hate to see you go. :( You could just 'set nomail' while your out of town. Here is the link to some helpful list info at the HASH website. http://www.hash.com/support/maillist.asp If you still want to unsubscribe, you can do so from there as well. Later, Rob Shematek

  10. Hey everybody Once upon a time, back in the AM9.5, I loaded the plugins from ZPiDER(zevel, zettle, and zpiral). Pretty cool plugins, by the way. They worked fine. Tonight I put them in my 'hxt' folder for AM10.5o and when I restart they don't show up in my plugin list. Have I missed something? Early thanks for any help, Rob Shematek

  11. I feel your pain. Some time ago I asked a similar question but got no response.

To add to your thoughts, try this:

Pull up one of the old primitives(box,slab,...). Take notice of the rounded edges, where the splines have been peaked and the gammas & magnitudes tweaked to form the round edge(by the way I learned these techniques from your website and yves poissant, so thanks!). In v8.5 and 9.5 this worked fine, however in 10.5, while the gamma is still correct, the magnitude is no longer large enough tocreate that smooth curve.

Once upon a time, I asked Steve Sappington about this, but it was in a lengthy email full of other questions and he may have missed it. No big deal, because I didn't have a large number of models anyway. I just assumed it was a slight change in the spline algorithm that would some work to my advantage. In fact, with v10.5 at any control point you can change the incoming spline magnitude separate from the outgoing magnitude, thus eliminating the need to peak control points in some instances. I have built a new cube primitive, that I'd be happy to send if you would like.

I know this hasn't helped your particular plight, but perhaps the information will help you towards the solution.

    Give you joy,

    Rob

  12. Looks good so far.

I was looking at the wireframe and it looks to me that the small fins just in front of the tail are separate from the main body. Will this cause you any problems in animating?
