Problem solved. Upgrading to v14 did help. I just hadn't completely installed it.

Lori,
If you've already worked with the Peaking and the Smoothing then you are ready for the next stage (probably already worked with that too). You want to dig in and work with the Bias Handles and get some proper ease in and ease out of the Lip Poses.
One thing also about lip sync is that we as humans tend to blend and blur our words which often makes some poses unneccessary. If its not because we are lazy it can generally be attributed to slang and differences in dialect.
One trick people often use is to place two fingers on your lips while reciting the words. Note the movement and work with that. You'll often find you can not only live with a lot less poses but it fits the dialogue much better.
Hi Rodney.
I'm getting the lingo now. I was thinking of peaking and smoothing in animation not in modeling. I didn't use the peaking and smoothing functions in modeling or the bias handles. Didn't even occur to me. I'll try again but this time not open the mouth so wide. I think that will help too.
Thanks,
Lori

Lori,
One thing to consider when using dopesheets for lipsync is to go into the timeline and adjust the interpolation on the keyframes. I'm not sure I have a specific technique to champion but you can experiment. For instance, at the basic level you could Peak (P Key) the channels to give crisp/sharp closer to the mouth movements. Then while listening to the audio go back and Smooth (O Key) the keyframes that look awkward. An even better method is to adjust the keyframes individually without Peaking but running through it with Peaking is at least a starting place.
With a little adjustment in the channel you can be very precise in creating subtlety in your Lip Poses.
You are bound to run into the limitations of the models and the phoneme poses first.
You can then go back in and tweak those Lip Poses as you wish.
Keep on TaoA:Ming!
Thanks Rodney,
I haven't tried peaking and smoothing. I definately need to get this right as lip synching will be the main part of my project (someday). By peaking are you referring to the curve of the splines. Is there more info on how to use peaking and smoothing? Is there a better model you can recommend for me to play with?
I did play with jaw opening/closing adding keys because I felt I made the mouth too open therefore there was too much distance to cover between movements.

"Nice skies." I’m not sure how you’re making your pictures of the airplane. Are you rendering from the modeling window? Let me know.
Meanwhile, I’ll assume that you are in the modeling window, since there is no scenery (ground, sky, etc.) around your airplane. Open a new Choreography, and import your airplane into the choreography (File/Import or right click in the models library window and select New/Shortcut and select your airplane model and open it, then drag the resulting icon into the choreography). Select the Images tab in the Library and open the folder labeled sky. There’s some beautiful skies in there! Pick one and drag it into the choreography. A box will open that allows you to select Rotoscope or Layer. Select Rotoscope and it will place the sky behind your ground plane. Delete the ground from the Objects folder in the Projects window. All that’s left is to position your airplane model and camera to the pose you like.
Hope this helps. Your plane looks great, just give it some friendly skies.
Hi Johnny,
I was taking a snapshot of my screen in the modeling window. When I tried to add sky in the past the sky looked too pixelated but today it doesn't have that look. I wasn't deleting the ground before- I 'm so new I hesitate to press the delete button!
Thanks for your help.

Exercise 10: FW Fighter
Name: Lori Hiatt
Tutorial and manual
Date of Completion November 17th, 2006
This was a struggle for me. I started to get the hang of it around my third try. Not happy with the propellers or the whole in the top of the tail section but needed to move onward before frustration set in.
I couldn't figure out how people got those nice skies behind the plane. Wish I knew.

Exercise 12: Lip Poses
Date of Completion November 26, 2006
Name: Lori Hiatt
Used tutorial and Manual
Struggled with getting my ooo pose to pucker at the lips and not sink/fold. Tried pulling it into the Z axis from the side but didn't get what I wanted.
Anyway here's Eddie with a secret.

1) Complement : Press the full stop/period key on your keyboard to select all of the currently unselected CPs instead of the currently selected ones.
That did it. Thanks!

Hi
I am on the fighter tutorial and when given instructions to delete the canopy from the body to make a "new Body" in preparation for decalling, the video said to do an edit, complement all. I don't have ths selection. I also noted I don't have complement spline either. Any ideas? I have the most recent version.

Hi Robert,
That makes sense that it wouldn't work. I was applying what I learned with walk cycles but that doesn't make sense!
Thanks,

Exercise 9: Flower Power
Name:Lori Hiatt
Date Completed 11/13/06

Learning: This was a good review as it has been a couple months since I've used A:M. I forgot to shade my flower while creating an action and she bowed the wrong way! Decided to not fix it though.

Hello,
I am working on the Flower tutorial and the tutorial talks about using a tilby key or clicking the right and left buttons on the mouse simultaneously to close the leaves. I only have a one button mouse and use control click for a left click. How do I do this with a one button mouse. What is the tilby key?
Thanks,

I know it has something to do with placing keyframes.
I just finished exercise 6 and on the topic of placing key frames at 0 for his feet remember to place a keyframe for a closed door at 0 too. I learned the hard way and the door flung open at 0, hands slipping everywhere!
Good luck

I agree Roger!
I was trying to slow it down and emphasize the heavy pulling in the timeline and then pause the fists on his hips but I was getting undesirable effects at the beginning. (Model was in neutral but backwards at 0)so I said whoa and stopped. Was afraid I would loose what I had.
As I gain experience I will try to perfect this.
Sillly question. I don't know how to quote people when posting, so I just delete everything and go. Any help here?

Thanks for the links.
I was trying to edit in the time line those squares in project workspace. I got undesirable effects at the beginning (model neutral position jumped facing backwards at 0) when I was spacing time inbetween my choreography.

Hi,
I'm going through the tutorials and it seems there is more to A:M than what is in the book. Is there a manual online or on the CD that I am missing?

Exercise 6: The Stuck Door
Name: Lori Hiatt
Date of Completion: September 23
Mine is too long I know-7seconds. I had trouble with the hands slipping. I keyed everthing at increments of five and then was trying to adjust them for more length in the graph area but got undesirable effects at the beginning so I am calling it done. I liked the ending.

Hi,
Nice room. The bat looks a bit too big to me and I think the room needs a rug.
