I'm going down the list of comments here and thinking I sure can't think of any constructive advice -- in fact WHO COULD after all this is Brian Prince then I come to Yves -- yep! the one person that could actually make some valuable suggestions --

 

The whole scene is so photo-real that I smacked myself to make sure I was real. I like the last render the best, probably that left to right writing thing, but it sure flows better for me. Really excellent picture!

The ballet animation looks so natural that it stretches the envelop. Absolutely amazing!!

the only other word I can think of right now is "WOW!!!"

I hope newbert doesn't mind if I re-ask the question ---- is there a good tutorial out there on styling Hash hair? I'm just getting the most recent version and I'd like to take full advantage of the hair material.

I think I'd try a solid background alternating between light and dark colors to get the flickering effect. You might vary the length that each color is displayed until you get the effect you're looking for.

The texture of the skin looks fantastic. I would want to make his color a darker and maybe make his eyeballs an off color rather than just white, also I would probably made the spots on his head a bit darker and more pronounced, of course all of that would depend on just what you wanted his character to be like. The way he appears to me now is perhaps a bit mischievous but maybe misunderstood and forlorn. The suggestions I made here would make him appear more evil.

In most cases you increase the number of patches and therefore the render time. I only join when I have to. Sometimes I link a single spline between two associated parts just to help with selecting.
