  1. cool! thanks! yeah...unfortunately i'm a computer geek. i even get paid 4 bein' a geek. oh well. i'll give this a shot.

last nite i tried installing & uninstalling the latest ati drivers as well as the omega drivers (i even tried the next to the latest). i tried bringing my resoluton down to 1024x768. i even reinstalled the latest directx. these things seemed to have no effect on my performance.

in d3d mode, if i pull up the jane model from the 2004 cd, the hit "9" to go into shaded mode, then "T" to go into turn mode, if i start turning, it literally acts like it's locked-up. if i wait a few minutes it gives back control. in openGL mode, i can rotate/turn the model in shaded mode, but it's very choppy. the FPS indicator at the bottom of the screen usually indicates 1 or 2 FPS when trying to do this in shaded mode. in wireframe mode...no problem. i'm at about 50 to 75 FPS.

what kind of FPS readings are others getting just trying to rotate/turn the jane model in shaded mode? this is nutz. i cannot figure out the problem. i'll try your suggestion tonite, killi.

  2. this was 1 of the 1st things 1 tried. i moved to the latest ati drivers & have now tried the next to latest drivers. no joy! :(

wat screen resolutions do most people work in? my native resolution is 1600x1200. as i was falling asleep last nite, the lightbulb kicked on that maybe i need to try lower resolutions. thots?

  3. hello!

i'm very new to this product so please bear with me. <grin> i started with version 8.5 (which i got from a friend). i then purchased A:M 2004 (version 10.5). i'm now on version 11.0. i have an ati mobility radeon 9000 with 128 mb of memory. a 2.8 gHz machine w/ 1 gig of memory.

under 8.5, i could not get things to work well (render or shaded mode) unless i used the d3d driver. in any 2004 version, i can only seem to get good performance using the OpenGL driver. but using that, when trying to work on a model, the screen is not painting properly.

for example, if i'm using OpenGL & i open the tarzan or jane model, then i switch to shaded view & rotate the model, it rotates, but is still a bit choppy. in d3d mode, this is impossible. if i rotate, i either lock-up, or i wait a very long time for a refresh.

however, if i'm in OpenGL mode & i try to create a simple spline, & move control points on that spline, when i'm clicking & draging the cp, i don't see the screen refreshing. if i switch to d3d mode, this works perfectly.

is there anything anyone can recommend i try to get A:M working with good performance and stability?

    help!!!!

  4. On what configuration? Works for me (10.5r, Win98SE, either OpenGL or Direct3D, chor mode).

i'm using winXP professional, tried OpenGL and D3D, & i'm using an ATI mobility radeon 9000.

strange thing is, the "X" key mapping worked perfectly under version 8.5 using D3D. i never got it 2 work using OpenGL.

thanka 4 all the info...i'll play when i get home 2nite...

  5. Hello!

i notice after working for a bit, i start getting the word "Error:" at the top of my windows when i try to resize them bigger. if i close down a:m and restart it, all is well again. i'm using a:m 10.5r. i didn't notice this in 8.5. any1 else running into this problem?

    thanks!

  6. yes. if you look at tools-->customize-->keyboard, u'll see two different "shaded" mappings and a "shaded/wireframe" mapping. i have everything set to defaults. the default for setting the "shaded mode for the selected model" is the "X" key, this does not work in this version for me (10.5r) but it did in my previous version (8.5). the "shaded/wireframe" mapping is defaulted to the "0" key. this works. i'm trying to figure out why "X" no longer works & what the difference is between the 2 functions.

    thanks

  7. hello!

i just upgraded from 8.5 to 10.5r. now when i hit "x" to work in shaded mode, it does not work. "0" works (above the letters), but not "x". wat is the difference between the two? any ideas what broke and how to fix it?

    thanks!

  8. thanks again, mike. it all keeps getting clearer 4 me. the biggest confusion 4 me is this:

    1) my 4 point spline created by joining 4 splines into a square - is not a valid patch

    2) a single spline extruded into the exact same shape & size - it is a valid patch

this is where my hang-up lies. i don't understand why #1 is not valid while #2 is valid. i mean, i know what intrinsically is going on, #1 is 4 some reason converted 2 a single spline, while #2 is more than 1 spline. i'm not sure how 2 tell how many splines somethings is.

is there no way to tell wat is or is not a valid patch, other than looking at it in shaded mode?

thanks 4 your patience while i muddle thru this...

  9. Valid 4 Point Patch = Any closed combination of 4 CPs on two or more splines.

i guess this is wat i'm ultimately confused by. in my original post, i indicated that i had created 4 seperate splines. i then joined them so their points (cp's) formed the corners of a square. but, 2 my surprise, this did not create a valid patch as i was thinking it would. i thot it would be a valid patch because i had 4 seperate splines (joined together), and 4 control points. i guess wat really happened is it turned my 4 splines into 1 spline joined to itself?

it seems to me that there needs to be one more button/feature/tool. i noticed the tool to create a 5-point spline. wouldn't be just as useful to have a tool that would allow u 2 select 3 or 4 cp's in a closed loop and turn it into a valid patch?

    thanks again!

  10. hello!

i'm just starting out and i'm very confused about splines and patches. i've read the definitions but i'm still not clear. here's why: if i create 4 splines and join their control points together to make a box, it does not create a valid patch (as far as i can tell). if i create one horizontal spline & extrude it down, it does create a valid patch. however, i cannot see any difference between these two squares. what am i missing? i'm using a:m 8.5p+.

    thanks!

  11. Hello!

I am very new to a:m. I'm using A:M 2001, 8.5p+ and i'm trying to create spheres. i understand the concept and everything is going ok, except my half-circle, that i'm going to lathe into the sphere looks a bit jagged, not perfectly curved. the odd thing is, if i close the project & reopen it, it then looks fine. so, i create my sphere. so far so good. if i look at it in shaded mode, it no longer looks perfect, nor does it in wireframe any longer either, unless i save, close, and reopen the project. anyone know why this is happening or how to get around it?

    thanks!
