  1. As I mentioned before, I am looking for computer specs to enhance AM.

Some added information about the computers I currently own.

1-Systemax AMD Athlon 650 (with coprocessor not on the mother board) w/ 512 Ram and Oxygen vx32 video card and Win98

2-Everex Explora GS28 with AMD Sempron 2800 w/256 ram and built in video (work computer) and WinXPhome

3-Sony VAIO RZ45G P4-3.2G with hyperthreading w/1.5G ram and nVidia 5200 (never has worked correctly and crashed to the point of me wanting to take it hunting with me...I hate that computer) and WinMCE2003

4-HP Pavilion a1267c AMD 64 3800 w/1G ram and integrated ATI Radeon xpress 200 and WinMCE2005 (Ok but slow video) but it does have a slot for a video card

  2. Hello all,

Been a while since I have posted (went back to college).

Now that I am almost finished and I was Spammed to upgrade to V13 (and I will),

My old computer crashed about a week or so ago (crappy performance since I bought it 2 years ago) so I have one to just get by for college work (word processing, etc).

When I order a new computer, what specs are best for AM now.

I would prefer to either get a Mac that will boot also to windows but I don't know if I want to spend that much money. Feel free to change my mind because I would like to Final Cut Studio. (now you know why I am hesitant to get a mac...i already have the adobe products)

OK, so providing you with that info,

give me some of the best hardware to use with the current AM (amt of RAM, video card, and any conflicting hardware/software)

    Thanks in advance.

    Ti

  3. I'm just throwing out a possibility here, so it may not be applicable to your situation....but......

If you are putting in the number 5 which is 5.00, that is 500%.

So it may just be a decimal error? 5% would be 0.05

Don't know if that will make a difference for you, but it may be worth trying.

  4. Is there a location where the Image contest is posted? I have seen the voting and the results, but I haven't seen the topic for the month.

Is it only on the mailing list where it is announced?

Would you make a Forum called Contests and pin the topics for the month for each contest?

    Thanks

  5. Pretty far south.

    About 60 miles from Florida.

Atlanta is about a 180-200 mile trip for me each way.

But the Atlanta group may be the closest group.

Hopefully, someone will be in the Albany, Georgia area or the Tallahassee, Florida area.

    Thanks for the reply.

  6. I have been a hobbist in 3d for about 6-7 years. I have tried many different 3d applications. I started with Poser and Bryce3d, moved onto Raytrace which later became Carrera. Then I moved to AM around version 7.

I had some difficulty adapting to AM but found it fun. A friend of mine (the only other person that I know that does 3d) was using LW and liked it alot so I moved to the LW student edition for $400 in 2002. Now that he has been to school for digital media, he has since moved to 3DSmax and loves the program. I have used the program in a class I took in the past and it is a fine program. I found the choreography to be very similar to AM. While I do like booleans, I am not about to pay over $600 for a student version when I can upgrade AM for $100. I have seen some low poly organic and inorganic work using that program ....both types of modeling was mainly decals and I found AM to be as good in final quality but the meshes were better.

We eventually want to do something on the professional level, but I simply can't afford to purchase the other programs for $1400 and $3500 when I can upgrade my AM subscription for $99 and get more than what is in those programs. I have found that the other programs are not any easier to master and in some cases more difficult and some require expensive plugins to do the same things that AM will do out of the box (which is already stated on the Hash site). I am glad to upgrade to the latest AM and am looking forward to using the hair feature.

So I thought this would be a good testimonial since I left AM in search of the "perfect 3d program" and end up returning to AM because of what I discovered after using the other programs. So save some time and money by just buy AM and don't worry about the other 3d programs.

    Update Dec. 2007...

Earlier in the year, I purchased the education version of 3ds max...version 9 since I am working on a project with a friend that uses 3dsMax.

While it does have some optional methods of modeling and the rendering is fast, I find the work flow not very fun or intuitive.

Perhaps I may learn to use the the program, but I am not currently enjoying using the program. Some things seem to require more clicking to get the same amount of work done.

Now that AM only cost $49 per year, it is more cost effective if someone wants to use it for commercial purposes. I do still wish they still offered the $99 update with the cd...instead for having to pay $299.

  7. Are you wanting actual sizes required in according to buidling codes?

Commercial buildings are different than residential buildings on steps, door sizes, the way the door swings and probably others, but I know of those.

Let me pull a book out....OK.....here is what I can give you....been a while so I have forgotten some info.

I don't know what you need so I will just give some general information.

Kitchen counter tops are 36in above the floor and ranges are typically the same height.

The space between the top of the base cabinets and the bottom of the wall cabinets are typically 18in.

The base cabinets are usually 24in deep. Wall cabinets are typically 12in deep.

For handicapped, use 30-33in for the countertop height.

    Lavatories are normally 32in height.

Built in cabinets like bars are about 42in high.

    Chairs have ranges.

    Back width is 19-22in.

Seat height about 17in. (15 for short, 18 for tall)

Arm lenght is typically 12in or 8 1/2in when working at a table.

    Seat height changes with application....

At a 42in bar, seat height should be about 36in

at a 36in counter, use 24in seat height.

    Stairs...

Residential riser between 7in and 7 3/4 in

Commercial riser is more than 7 3/4 in

Tread on both is more than 9in.

I'm not 100% certain the stairs are correct, but it is close.

Doors....I'm going on memory so I'm not 100% sure

    Residential swings in

    Commercial swings out

    Residential width is 2, 2 1/2, or 3 ft

Residential height is 6 ft 8 in

Commercial height is 7 ft (not 100% sure)

    Hope that helps
