  1. A very interesting topic!

Considering there are quite a lot of ads for 'free animators' at AWN the budget would be quite ok for an animator doing this on the side (although 4 mins is a whole music video).

I liked the reactions,.... pricing is always an iffy subject in any field.

I rekon an experienced animator can whack out a character in a day (fully rigged) cause he's got stuff lying around to modify from a stock pile, thats how I do it.

A panel beater friend of mine says the normal tarif for his work is 100 bucks an hour, which is accepted as normal. However I am sure he could beat a beatle into a porsche in less time than it would take me to do a 4 minute film. :)

    Good topic

    regards kanga

  2. Howdy list

New to version 11. Applied a colour decal of a LED board to a basic shape and the Black blocked in backgrounds dissapeared. Line graphics on the decal were ok. Key colour not set, set to black or white, once set couldn't un set same problem.

Anyone know a way to keep the blocks?

    Thanx in advance

  3. Hey Spark!

Is this a personal ad, cause if it is might be an idea to put an .AVI version up. I noticed comming from a mac background that no educational institutions (libraries ect.) used apple players here in Europe, all my shorts are in QT so I will have to change them. Many internet cafes and kiosks prevent download of anything to install, and while DivX is a great codec you will get more viewings if you have a Windows playable version.

    Greetings Chris

  4. Hi List!

Looked all over the place but couldn't find it. You used to be able to select a cp and see its absolute position in properties, then group other cps. assign that one cp a new position and bingo How is this achieved in version 11?

Also I have lost my link to killernuts search engine, if someone has it I would be much obliged.

    Regards Chris

  5. Hi Thom!

Well it's a discussion that's been 'hashed' over heaps of times. If you ask me what is professional, I would say getting paid for what you do. If you ask me about the standard of professioality then that's another matter. I use AM in a professional capacity but not in a main stream studio. If I would want that sort of work then it would be logical for me to use other software, not because of the standard of the software but because of a production environment. You said it yourself Í work in a Maya studio'.

  6. Ha ha!

Hey Phil I've had 3 mid life crisises but I never got a car out of it! :)

Thanx for all the great reactions. I will put up a 3/4 view soon as I have one. I was sort of going for that servere designery look and I know how hard photographers work to get a nice clean look, I thought hey our application doesn't put a dust speck in we don't want, hence the approach. I will also post a link to a double size version Zaryin.

    Thanx again!

  7. Hi Yves!

How ya doin? What brilliant warmth and atmosphere you generated here in this render. Right now I could use a bit of sleep myself,.... an if I could,..... just cuddle up next to that bear,......zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz -_-

    The Force be with ya,

  8. Hoi John I am sure it's going to be a ripping model! What I meant by detaching was, for example you could make your basic box with as many patches as you think you need, then manipulate the box into a basic car shape with the deformer box, then for the windshield (which is always nasty :) ) cut and copy, destroy the original wind shield on you box, move your new one in and place it a little back (or deeper than the original), correct the mags and biases of the splines cause now they are broken. Select the windshield hole edges on your chassis, extrude and move them into the model for depth (correct these too), and you will have a continuation of shape with a sudden change in direction, only the windshield is floating but you have that nice edge detail. You are actually starting with a basic shape and altering the panel depths, manipulating mag and spline biases lets you keep shape integrity. Probably more info than you wanted but I came up against it myself. Lately been doing quite a bit of product design and visualization in AM and the Reynolds link got me out of hot water more than once! Kind regards,

  9. wHHOOOAAAA! Do th funky chicken! The eyes are great and you used them to max effect. A real nice fresh approach and expressive animation. The On2 compression is about the best I have seen so far, guess I'll take a tour of the QT site (again). Congrats mate.

  10. Hi John! Looks racy,..... I am a big fan of mech modeling as well as the organic and it looks like you made everything in one piece (except the back fin). You do this with organics cause when a model is animated the other parts have to move in sympathy which is what splines are best at! Mechanical models have 'by nature' sudden and drastic changes in shape direction, so when you make something from one pice it's difficult to get a full rigid look, all the splines are influencing each other and everything comes out a bit rubbery. I wouldn't say this except you made the comment yourself (bumpy). One approach to make your life easier is to split up the parts and let them float and run into each other where necessary, bones will keep them perfectly aligned. It doesn't matter if you are making a realistic model or a noddy car, to get that full look in a one piece model is very difficult and time consuming. I can't recommend Rodger Reynolds link to mech modeling in AM enough, it was a revelation to me. Kind regards,

  11. Hello Forum! Using AM 2004 with dual monitor support in xp home. Hmmmmm can't move the chor window to my right hand monitor (away from the menues). Cant seem to find a preferance that will fix this. Has anybody got any ideas? Greetings Chris

  12. Hi Wombat! I started out with poser, I guess you want your stuff free but its a pretty good program to use as a referance. I always rekon the models look a bit stiff, but that has a lot to do with how they are positioned. You can alter and manipulate model proportions (even take a peek at the colour and bump maps). You can take screen dumps from all views (plus 45 degree views). Like Sim One they work on weekends, public holidays, and never get sick! Greetings Chris B)

  13. Ho ho ho!

Thanx 4 th great Xmas present Jim. In 2 weeks my new pc. arrives, (th ol mac bombs out after 60 seconds of viewing) but what I have seen so far looks great! Voiceover is clear and distinct. By all the reactions you are getting I would say I am not the only one who appreciates the tutes :) .

    Kind regards, Chris

  14. Ha ha great question! I reckon thats why they find all those layers of 'other' paintings under those masterpieces when x-raying them. Were canvases so expensive or is it possible that Rembrandt had the same problem you are having? Thing I like about C.G. is the fluidity, it is possible to try out other combinations, but you are right 'when does one stop'. I got some good advice from a great illustrator once when referring to work that isn't commissioned (work for your folio or just for the sake of advancing yourself), he said, "walk into your studio and be surrounded by at least five canvases, work in parallel you will approach the project freshly each time". I like to work on at least four things at once and this works for me, you could try it. Maybe you will find it confusing, it's just one approach. Do you stop before the money is gone, before the client walks out, before your animation festival entry date expires,.... I dunno it's still got me beat. Nice question.

  15. Hello List Got myself a christmas present and installed internet at home. Nosing around the Hash site revealed the AM Forum. I am absolutely blown away and have nothing to say but congratulations. Also I have been using version v8.7 for quite some time now and have been very happy with it, and due to reasons beyond my control I have been out of the loop for a while. Before ordering the 2004 update I took a peek at the GUI previews and new features,.... it was like stepping into a time machine,.... amazing! Greetings to all  Chris
