  1. Thanks that works......but how are you going to fix all the links in forums and website w/o going nuts?

BTW new website is hard to navigate....is the old "blue" website still available?

there's just things like links to the FTP and updates that either dont exist or are hard to find on "yeti themed" site

Also just noticed site does not format correctly for Firefox it used to ....at least a couple weeks ago....

  2. Hi Rodney and all,

I sat down this morning ready to work on Exercise 8. When I tried to d/l the video I got a page-not-found error.

So I said ok maybe its just that one tute......tried to randomly d/l other tutes........apparently the links are all broken, or the server hosting them is down. I'm kinda bummed ;(. Hopefully they will be back up the next time I can make time to use A:M

  3. Well I finally got something suitable to show.

Remarks/Suggestions for Improvement: Well I finally got a constraint setup to work for me. I placed Kin and orient constraints on handbones and just used kinmatics on the forarms. That helped things behave the way I wanted at least. I may add to the end a bit more.....maybe rabbit opening the door and snickering from the other side. But for now ill call it done. I want to get on to modeling ;P

Thx for the suggestion Dhar.....you pointed me to look at handbone.

  4. Hi all,

I am having a terrible time with the constraints on this one.. I followed the steps and have both Kinmatic and orient like (both w/ compensate mode on before applying them) However when i turn the knob the hands go sliding off the knob in opposite directions.

I feel almost as if I am missing something, like maybe a 3rd constraint or is there a way to make the Knob's roll only affect the arm bones on one plane.

it seems the roll diameter of the knob is much bigger than the knob itself and the hands want to go to this outside diameter.

The only solution, that I think I can come up w/ on my own here, is to not even try to turn the knob and just have him pull a few times.

    Any pointers/help would be appreciated.....

    TIA,

    Zzzippo

P.S. Im staying over at my parents house this week and man.......their ComCast goes out constantly.......It's certainly making it difficult for me to d/l the videos and upload my results.

  7. Hi Rodney and all!

I'm back from a 3 year hiatus, and I've decided to freshen up on the ol' A:M. And what a nice way to go about it. Kudos to you, Rodney, for taking on this endeavor to help people learn A:M.

  8. This thread saved me from going completely bonkers!

Turning the Areo desktop from Premium to Basic mode, does indeed solve some of the glitches I was experiencing. This includes the greyed out selection box , when trying to select cp's!

Might want to "Sticky" this one somewhere, before christmas rolls up on us and there is a flood of new Vista users.

    Its good to be back!

  10. Sometimes it is helpful to use the "Hide" and "Lock" features, especially when the mesh gets complex.

I prefer to use "Lock" more than "hide".

Select just the points you need to work with and hit the Lock Icon. Everything except the splines and cp's that you have selected will be locked. Hide works in a similar way, except the unselected items are virtually "hidden" from view.

Then you should have an easier time getting splines to attach where you want them to. ;)

  11. FYI,

My ISP has decdided to change my ip address, so now all my plugins are located at a different address. Until I get a domain name (which I may do really soon), you can get them from the directory:

    Arthur,

You may want to try out one of the free Dynamic Domain Services out there.

I personally use www.dyndns.org to keep my IP and DNS all straight for me.

The service is completely free and very easy to setup. You just setup an account, then choose one of the many available clients, (download and install). Enter your account info and all that for the client, and thats about it.

The Client will check your machine/(or preferably "router status page") however often you set it to do so.

If it detects a new IP from your provider, it then logs in to your "free" account and registers your DNS to the new IP without having to re-populate the DNS all the way around the web.

They also offer permanent domains as well, however there is a small $9.00 per month fee.

I have been running a webserver from my home office for the past 3 months without it ever having missed an IP change. http://www.cp3design.dyndns.org

(right now I have a clients website there, that I am currently working on....tis a bit slow due to the cable company restricting upload speeds to 12k a sec <----I think they are doing this to try and fight "big file" sharing use of their network)

You are probably already aware of such services though......so maybe someone will get some use out of this info.

If you or anyone else need help setting up Dynamic DNS or even a home webserver, e-mail me privately or catch me on IRC and I will try to help as much as I can.

  12. You might try not using the cd at all for the install.

It probably is a good idea to clean your registry out.

Download the latest update for A:M 2003 10.5n I think. Install that and see if you can get past the splash screen.

I think the perk cd wants to install version 9.5 You didn't exactly mention which version you were ultimately trying to install.

I've always just used the cd as a dongle even on new machines. And do the install off download. ;)

  13. Here are my times:

Athlon 2500+(1.87 ghz) 512MB Geforce FX 5900 128mb (damm video card cost more than the CPU and motherboard)

Frame 97= 1:03 (Loading decals from CD drive slows times on the first frame)

    Frame 98 = 51 seconds

    Frame 99 = 52 seconds

Screen Shots: (warning to dial-upers large pictures)

    http://www.cp3design.dyndns.org/render_times.jpg (244k)

    http://www.cp3design.dyndns.org/render_options.jpg (232k)

since I was rendering the project off the cd I rendered frame 97 as well. This way the decals and stuff were in memory, and frame 98-99 didn't have to wait for the drive to spin up and load them.

You'll also notice I have 5 other apps running and stealing memory away from AM but they did not affect the render times very much.. A little overclocking in the BIOS might get me down near 45 a frame but I dont really feel the urge to mess with it.
