Heat glow

I'm working with a rock being struck by lightening. Have got the lightening to look the way I want it to but, would like to make the rock heat up as a result of the strike, with the colour spreading down from the point of impact

Initially I had thought to do it using a diffuse colour change animated through different layers but that started to look like a Doctor Who scarf made out of stone, with colour bands.

Can anyone kindly suggest a method that might work ? I wondered about animated maps perhaps ?

The spherical color combiner can be animated to change the size of its rings.

you will need to turn on "show more than drivers" to see the material parameters in the chor.

Thank you for your help. Is there a guide to using the colour combiner available? Its not an area I have any knowledge of ( again ! )
