A:M and After Effects

No, they would not have to be on the same computer as long as you have a way to transfer your rendered images or movies to the computer with after effects on it.

 

Either via network connection or a USB drive most likely.

You certainly don't have to have them on different systems but...

 

Having them on two different systems would allow you to work on the other while the other is doing its own stuff.

This is of course will be even more important when more than one person is involved.

 

In my estimation it would be optimal to have them on different systems but there is no requirement to do that.

Just to mention it since you want to run them on a laptop:

AE and A:M are very computer-heavy products... AE will eat up lots of RAM and you need fast HDs to work with it and A:M at least lots of CPU-power and sometimes RAM.

 

Be aware of hat when using a laptop... if it is not a highend-one, I would not recommend to use AE on it. A:M can be used to create stuff on a laptop, but rendering will not be too fast on it either.
