Exercise 15 - Eat My Dust!

Recommended Posts

The dust is there, just hard to see. Blink and you'll miss it Rob!

Mike, maybe you could extend the decay some more on the dust so it lingers. In general you want the dust to appear quickly and then fade away slowly.

Odd thing here if I view this in Firefox the backgrounds all white, if I download and watch, its all black.

What did it look like when it left you Mike?

It's on a black background on my screen, both locally and in the browser.

Yeah it is rather quick. That's the settings TAoAM instructs to use, though. If you go to the video counterpart of the tutorial, the relevant bit where the timing and size of the dust is set starts at 3:50 in. He goes about it a bit differently than the book instructs, but the frames and settings are the same. Unfortunate he doesn't show a full render of it for comparison.

To be honest, I find myself questioning at least one aspect of every TAoAM exercise I've done so far. Though, I figure it's more about teaching the features of the program, and not so much about the results, so I don't think too much into it.

Not sure why the background color is different, though. That's odd.

I suppose I can tweak them to make it last a bit longer.

Here ya go...

I extended the decay time of each dust "poof" and re-rendered it out at higher res, and in AVI format instead of MOV. See if that makes a difference.

Edit... Okay apparently AVI's are a no-no. Let me re-do it in MOV again! :-p

I think you might be right. As I recall when doing those exercises, I started to wonder if they were deliberately putting in discrepancies in order to boost our problem solving skills as well ;)

Or our tenacity! Or both!

Fortunately for me (sometimes), I can be pretty tenacious lol. When I'm trying to do something, and it's not cooperating, I get frustrated and more determined to make it work. Even if I have to come back to it at a later time, with a clearer head.

Nicely done MikeV!

I caught it the first time, but it was just one step. Always good to do a few steps to make it apparent.

Actually it is both steps, it's just that it's happening right on frame 1, so by the time your eye catches on to what's happening, it's over.

Personally, when I think of dust coming off a footstep, I think of it expanding and fading as it rises from the ground. But, again, I guess this was just to introduce and demonstrate the particle system. At least that's my guess.

Thanks!
