SO Trailer

Recommended Posts

I'm still looking for a volunteer to help create a trailer for Scarecrow of Oz. Please let me know if you are interested in putting the trailer together.

I have gone through the film and selected a bunch of candidate shots that could be used in a trailer. Here they are:

00:00:05 - 00:00:30 : Titles (edit down)

00:00:42 - 00:00:43 : Tin Woodman looks suspicious after crow flies

00:04:23 - 00:04:30 : Trot: "It's coming closer!"

00:10:26 - 00:10:29 : Trot does a flip coming out of the cave

00:12:40 - 00:12:44 : Ork carrying Trot & Cap'n Bill

00:14:58 - 00:15:03 : Trot throws apple, hits Scarecrow (perhaps cut shorter)

00:17:55 - 00:18:04 : Scarecrow ventures out onto the rope bridge

00:19:59 - 00:20:20 : Pessim telling Woodman he hasn't seen Scarecrow

00:21:24 - 00:21:27 : Cap'n Bill and Scarecrow are a little too close while enjoying the smells

00:25:28 - 00:25:33 : Bumpy "From the berries, of course! You may want to try one yourself."

00:26:22 - 00:26:25 : Scarecrow warily but graciously accepts the berry

00:30:15 - 00:30:16 : Trot: "We have these"

00:31:27 - 00:31:31 : Flying, taking off

00:34:17 - 00:34:23 : Flying over the city; Pon exclaims "Yes! This is home!"

00:31:35 - 00:31:41 : Pon: "It's all because the princess fell in love with me." Trot: "Did she really." Scarecrow: "I don't see why."

00:35:51 - 00:35:55 : SC + Trot + Cap'n Bill entering Jinxland Castle

00:35:58 - 00:35:59 : King Krewl: "Who's there?"

00:37:36 - 00:37:48 : G.Goo: "But the princess is very interesting, very interesing indeed. What does she say, sire? Will she marry me?" Krewl: "Ask her!" G.Goo: "I have. Many times."

00:38:05 - 00:38:07 : G.Goo: "Still, we must overcome difficulties."

00:38:27 - 00:38:37 : G.Goo: "I have laid aside a bushel of precious gems, each worth a king's ransom to present to your Majesty on the day that I wed the princess."

00:39:26 - 00:39:28 : Trot coming out of her room in Jinxland Castle to investigate crying.

00:40:17 - 00:40:23 : Trot: "Pon isn't great shakes, anyhow, it seems to me. There's a lot of other people you could love."

00:40:27 - 00:40:31 : Gloria: "And I'll never love Googly Goo. Never! As long as I live!"

00:41:14 - 00:41:16 : Tin Woodman: "A journey begun is a journey taken."

00:43:01 - 00:43:05 : Witch: "Ooooh, yes. Better stand back, your Majesty!"

00:43:33 - 00:43:35 : Witch laughing

00:43:48 - 00:43:53 : Tin Woodman in water

00:45:07 - 00:45:10 : Pon reacts to guards coming; Pon, Trot, and finally SC run away

00:45:20 - 00:45:22 : Pon puts hands on cart he was hiding behind

00:46:53 - 00:47:02 : Witch: "Magic art now will change your mortal heart!"

00:47:28 - 00:47:34 : Pon: "All is lost!" SC: "Shhh! I have a plan!"

00:49:02 - 00:49:06 : Grashopper: "Come with me, matey! I think we can be helpin each other more than you know!"

00:50:04 - 00:50:08 : SC: "Because I've decided you're too cruel a king to run so beautiful a country."

00:51:14 - 00:51:23 : Scarecrow on the stake at the bonfire

00:54:53 - 00:55:03 : Crows coming in across the moon (far)

00:55:16 - 00:55:19 : Crows coming in across the moon (near)

00:55:27 - 00:55:29 : Crows coming in across the moon (close-up)

00:55:11 - 00:55:14 : Tin Woodman: "Will you look at that!"

00:55:26 - 00:55:27 : Scarecrow's smile

00:55:48 - 00:55:50 : Pon struck by witch

00:56:13 - 00:56:15 : Zoom in on G.Goo in tree

00:57:06 - 00:57:09 : Witch: "I defy you all by my magic power!"

00:58:05 - 00:58:08 : Witch: "Now, you shall feel my wrath!"

00:58:43 - 00:58:49 : Witch: "I will make you all so very sorry you have crossed my path!"

Don't give away Cap'n Bill getting turned into a grasshopper.

I think a 1 minute teaser would do well. Something that doesn't try to convey the story. I hate trailers for kids films that give away the whole story.

Same with grown-up films.

I think "teaser" is a good word. It would be neat to take a couple of sections like this:

00:31:35 - 00:31:41 : Pon: "It's all because the princess fell in love with me." Trot: "Did she really." Scarecrow: "I don't see why."

00:37:36 - 00:37:48 : G.Goo: "But the princess is very interesting, very interesing indeed. What does she say, sire? Will she marry me?" Krewl: "Ask her!" G.Goo: "I have. Many times."

And extract these pieces so it says:

G.Goo: "What does she say, sire? Will she marry me?"

Scarecrow: "I don't see why."

Or maybe Trot saying, "It's coming closer!", and then quickly show the crows against the moon.

Since these are in different scenes/backgrounds, it's not making people think they are the same. But it gives some feeling for what the tone and some elements of the movie are without giving up the plot.

You wouldn't even have to maintain the dialog. You could take one of the better songs and cut shots to it. Choose them for interesting action rather than dialog. Maybe just have a few that keep the original audio.

Some good candidates there. I think start with some fun scenes and gradually ramp up the threat level by bringing in the witch/GGoo/Krewl. Maybe in between you could have Pon howling about how he was thrown out of the kingdom. If a song doesn't fit, you could use some mood music....which I'm sure you're capable of producing. ;)

I spent an evening this week looking up free video editing software. As far as free goes, I didn't really find much for Windows that would fit the bill. Linux had a couple of apps. I spent some time today playing around with Cinelerra, a Linux-based editing system (thank goodness for virtualization). It's going to take some effort to learn it, but I think I will be able to do a proof-of-concept trailer for Scarecrow of Oz with it.

Chris,

Let us know how Cinerella works for you. I've been interested but don't have the patience to set up all the virtual stuff or to maintain Linux.

If worse comes to worse I'll be glad to purchase a subscription to Adobe Premiere for the effort. On the downside, use of Premiere is sure to become habit forming for you and unfortunately I can't commit beyond that. Perhaps you could start with a trial of Premier and go final with a subscription? What we'd learn from that effort would certainly be worth what I'd pay for in the subscription.

Bottom line: I'd like to support your effort here.

I have Adobe Premiere and I could spend some time on it.
I'd like to spend some time on it to get at least one concept together. But it definitely wouldn't hurt to have 2 people giving it a go! (Especially since this is not my forte.) Send me email at mouse at intranet dot org if there's anything you need.

If it hasn't been mentioned... I'll just mention that you can do short form editing in A:M using its NLE ability.

A minute or two of shots would not stress it too much although certainly your editing workflow would be much faster in a dedicated NLE like Premiere.

Hi, Ernesttx,

Sorry for the delay. Send me an email to mouse at intranet dot org, and we'll figure out how to get things rolling with the resources we have. I am pixelstix on Skype, btw, although I only get on when I've arranged to meet someone online.
