Variable Visibility on Body Appendage

I have a figure that has been fully rigged (well not fully, gotta set up joint constraints yet), and there's a part of the character I don't want to be visible all the time. I had thought about creating it as a seperate model, but I want the bone to be part of the main character's skeleton. The appendage in question is not attached to my characters geometry.

 

Is there a way to still include this appendage in the skeleton without it being visible all the time?
