Note: The 2005 Edition of The Art of Animation:Master has updated Exercise 16 to include Particle Sprites. You are welcome to complete either the old or new version of the exercise but the new version is recommended.

You can download the 2005 manual here:

*Note that this is a 25MB download.

The Art of Animation:Master (Online)

Please add your exerices to this topic and others will join in.

The Art of Animation:Master is being completed on a continual basis in the New Users Forum. Meeting deadlines can be an important skill to master early on but this course is self paced to allow each person the flexibility they need to learn the basics of Animation:Master. The course can be completed in as little time as necessary or as much as is needed by each participant.

Note: You may want to download the videos first.

All available Video Tutorials related to TAOA:M can be found on one page:

Exercise 16: Smoke, Wind and Fire

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Exercise 16 does not have a video tutorial. This is an opportunity to take what you've learned thus far and apply it in Exercise 16. The text and illustrations of TAoA:M along with the project files on the A:M CD give you the tools needed to successfully navigate Exercise 16 and further develop your ability to solve problems as they arise.

Thanks Den,

Great job on exercise 16!

Although there is no video tutorial for Exercise 16 there is now an exercise page.

... and here we are!

You are entirely too quick. Someone hire this man! :)

For those on broadband I highly recommend downloading Shaun Freeman's excellent tutorial linked above to complement Exercise 16. Thanks Shaun! :)

TheMike,

Glad to have you posting with us!

I wasn't sure what you wanted me to do with the Choreography file so...

I adjusted the camera slightly and rendered...

The Cho files don't maintain images so that part is missing from the render.

...at any rate...here 'tis! (See attached image)

Den,

I'll miss you when you move on to bigger and better things.

You've helped me move toward improving the exercises and I hope in time they will be even more fun to work through here in the forum.

Thanks!

Rodney

Exercise: #16 Earth, Wind & Fire .... er.... or something like that ;-)

Date: May 6, 2005

Comments: Thanks for the hint on turning off particles while working on the animation of this scene, that was VERY helpful. Sorry if a few of the sounds in this one are a little weak (my recording gear is in use on another project right now, so I just used some stock sounds).

Here's my clip: http://cybersummit.org/AM/Ex16_FireSmoke.mov

Thanks,

Tommy

The smoke didn't come out too clearly.

No it didn't.

There is a setting (can't recall just off hand) that allows the overlapping elements to add color to each other. What was that... Additive color??

Chris,

That's a great scene. A first (adding such extensive environment/background) for this exercise I think.**

Very nice! (Makes me think of potential Tin Woodman of Oz scenery)

I'm not sure if you got my email. Ken Heslip is going to grab your other files from your website and move them to a place where I can grab them. I'm looking forward to seeing them.

** Tom Jansen's is the other one of note (shown a few posts above and reposted below):

Sorry Rodney, I dont think I got your mail:( . Let me know if your still having problems viewing the files. Is it my webspace? The above scene looks better with grass, but it was going to take too long to render. I am hoping to use the forest for nimee amee's house

Exercises Completed: 17

Date Completed: Oct 18th, 2005

Instructor: A few years of A:M use, the book, and web tutorials, plus also doing the mentor program with Paul Daley. David Rogers book... Jeff Lew's DVD.

Comments: I was going to do the tutorial based off the video, but it seems in v11.1 A:M is a bit to different. Over Life options aren't available, so I couldn't follow along with the updated PDF manual or Shaun's wonderful video.

However, I do think I think all tutorials should be narrated by Shaun, but I reserve the right to pretend it's Russell Crowe... not crazy phone throwing Crowe, but L.A. Confidential looking Crowe. Ohh! Hugh Jackmen instead...

Beautiful still of Shaggy Marc. I like!

Would you be willing to share the project file (with spriticle images) in a zip file?

I know I'm beggin' but darn it... This exercise needs that to plus up the lesson for those that want to experiment further.

Seriously!

I have not posted a project before , i hope this will work

First I have clicked "embedd all" and then I have saved the project in a other

directory. So I presume everything is now included in the file.I have tested

it and reload the project in AM without the cd in it.(because the shaggy model

was on the cd)and AM asked for the cd (which was not in the drive)but loaded

the shaggy model anyhow.

Please let me know if it worked.

Greetings

Marc

(Been around since the Playmation days )

Remarks/Suggestions for Improvement:

I replaced Shaun Freeman's 'flames.tga' file with one of my own pieced together from some night time bonfire pictures from the net.

I've provided my flames (in zip format) for everyone to use.

Enjoy! :D

Hi!

I having a problem with the settings in Shaun Freemans Particle Sprites tutorial. When I set the Rate of Emission to 15 for the smoke and 10 for the sparks they disappear. If I increase the rate of emission for either item above 35 they show up but much to intense.

Im using version 12.0s.

Thanks in advance for any help on this problem.
