Dear Martin Hash and your incredible team of software artists,
I have been in the Animation, Illustration, Video Editing and Graphic Design business for the last 20 years. I was classically trained (pencil on paper, and vinyl on cel) in animation. I have a bachelor's degree with dual majors animation and anatomical illustration (I draw dead people...).
I have made my living in hand drawn animation, Flash animation, and 2D animation. Throughout the years I have toyed with 3D animation. The first product I used was Extreme 3D from Macromedia. A few others I tried were 3D Studio Max (designed for engineers), Lightwave (designed to be as hard as possible for no apparent reason), among others purchased and left to rot on a shelf after many days of frustration. Not to mention most took me away from my favorite artistic tool my Apple Macintosh. Not to get into ANY discussion of PC vs Mac...I just like it because it is like slipping on an old worn in baseball glove. I have used others and I always return to old reliable.
Three years ago at a comic book convention in Chicago I was introduced to a new tool in my bag of tricks. A marvelous, miraculous piece of software called Animation Master.
I watched several of the demos at the convention being performed live and it seemed like anyone could do it. There must be a trick. 3D animation is not for mere mortals. The gentleman giving the demo assured me it was as easy as it seemed.
I got out my checkbook (expecting to pay a hefty sum). I paid $299 and received a free T-shirt! I was sure the man had been overcome by the overpowering smell of comic-book-geek perspiration. I took my package home and never looked back.
I have been using it ever since and on my trusty Macintosh no less and more recently in OS X!
Now was the software all they had advertised? Yes and no. Yes, it was as easy to use as I had been shown. Yes it was a powerful as the more expensive software drawing dust on my shelf. Then what is the "No" part you ask?
They simply didn't have time in the demonstration to show ALL the amazing stuff this software is capable of in the right hands. I only got a hint of the incredible resource this online forum has become. I had no clue as to how helpful the folks at Hash can be when you are in a bind and you are desperate for clues (they called me on the phone to make sure the problem was worked out). When was the last time you got a call from Adobe, Apple, Microsoft or Macromedia?
And even as easy as it is to get started using the software, every day I learn something new about it. Recently, I began taking advantage of the New Users section of this very forum to begin working through every exercise in the Art of Animation Master Manual. I thought I knew but I learned what I didn't know.
To sum up....Thank you Martin Hash for believing 3D animation can be about "one artist, one computer". Thank you to the Hash team for making Animation Master what it is today and what it will be tomorrow. How many software companies give you ALL the updates they make to their software throughout the year for a mere $99 upgrade fee?
Keep up the good work, you are helping me realize my dreams and making 3D animation a part of my livelihood.

Well the walk cycle, wheel cycle and the constraint exercise are Chapter Six in the web tutorials but "The Door's Stuck" is chapter six in the book. I like to think of them as Chapter Six A, B, C, and D. respectively.
Don't worry I'll do them all before I count them as done.
Take your time checking them out. I have to go back to working for money tomorrow so it will be awhile before I get back to this fun stuff.
Thanks for starting this Rodney. I have enjoyed the excuse to push myself with my favorite program Animation Master; and I have learned a lot; and I feel like I have just gotten started.
Thanks again,

Hey Rodney,
I am getting ready to do the walk and wheel cycle exercise and I don't have "FatGuy". Is this a model that is not included with the Macintosh version of the software? Or am I supposed to get the "guy" from someplace else?
Any help would be appreciated....
Thanks,

Thanks Rodney! And thank you so much for taking upon yourself to do this.
I noticed you haven't gotten to putting up links for the next few exercises...is it okay if I post links to my finished exercise here or should they go someplace else?

Remarks/Suggestions for Improvement: Keep up the good work!
Even though I have used Hash Animation Master for some time I have never forced myself to sit down and work through every exercise in the Art of AM. Rodney's idea of offering a certificate has given me the excuse to DO IT!

Well, that's two, three if you count me. A great start! Are there any others out there willing to admit you are from St. Louis and using Hash?
As soon as the Christmas cookie crumbs are all cleaned up it will be time to plan a meeting.
Let me know what times and locations are good for everyone.
Thanks,

We tried this a few months back and we had one GREAT meeting. I thought it was time for another go...Are there any Animation Master users in St. Louis MO who would be interested in getting together?
If so I would love to hear from you.

Exercise 6: The Door's Stuck
in TaoA:M and the A:M Technical Reference
Posted
Name: Den Dotson
Exercises Completed: Six
Date Completed: Thursday March 7, 2005
Instructor: Rodney (Locksmith) and that guy on the web tutorials (hey he didn't help at all with this one!)
Remarks/Suggestions for Improvement: This exercise seemed to drive the software crazy. The constraints didn't seem to be really stuck at all. The hands slid around like the knob was covered in vaseline. If I changed views I couldn't move the bones to animate without quitting and restarting the application. I hope there is a 11.1e on the way soon that is a little more cooperative.
