  1. these were great - fun to see them again
  2. nice work Mark, just catching up on this you even did the Desilu ending
  3. Hey there, the link isn't working even though I'm logged in. Seems interesting... I was sleeping at that time recovering from the early morning Australian music tech podcast.
  4. could be a fun thing to try the other issue is the geometry of the molecule based in the atoms as you change out atoms the geometry needs to change (angles and distances) due to neigbor layout and the types of bonds (ionic, covalent, Hydrogen bonding) and as a structure gets more complicated like amino acids forming proteins or DNA/RNA the structure (primary, secondary, tertiary...) can change drastically based in attraction like H-bonding or van der Waals forces this get pretty nerdy but it's important if you are going to submit to a science site, publication, teacher, student, or other related person or contest otherwise basic diagrammatic stuff works OK now you can see why I was working on ways to build structures in AM many years ago and got distracted on other stuff, lots of stuff to consider, especially based on what I was going to do with the material - RasMol was a lot easier and completely accurate, but less customizable good stuff here nonetheless - nice to see it I was going to make a Covid-19 viroid but opted for a nice OBJ made by someone online and pretty cheap - I can still use it as a prop in AM
  5. nice idea, sorry I missed the session - I was up super late working on stuff and woke up at noon I was building molecular models from scratch back in AM 99 (7.1) using PDB files and RasMol as references, since I'm a bio/chem nerd - my degree was in Cell and Molecular Biology the tricky thing abut this design is to be chemically accurate you need to make each atom a diff size and color (all N red, all O blue, all H gray or white, etc.) based on the element, just like PDB files and following the IUPAC standard that was a big part of the grunt work as I worked on models of caffeine and its brother theobromine (chocolate), among other structures
  6. silly me, I see what I missed - thank you sir
  7. this is a cool project I tried the other day to do a Boolean cutter from scratch to make a group of 3d text engrave into a surface, but I couldn't find the setting any more on the Mac version - haven't used it for years but I was a multi-platform feature unless that changed I searched all the bone properties in the workspace and nothing, but I remember using it anywhere as it's in the standard manual and not listed as a PC-only feature anyone know if the Boolean Cutter feature is on Mac and PC or just PC? I'll try opening this project on the Mac to see if it works
  8. So the prop import works in Mac v15, maybe later, but not v19. If I save the Mac v15 project and open in v19 the prop is omitted with an error. So if I want to use any new features in an animation and a prop it's SOL until the version is fixed if possible. Again I am forced to use Windows for all AM stuff if I want complete functionality. I don't know how Largento deals with this unless he just sticks to the basics with AM on the Mac. His work is excellent and feature filled nonetheless. I would be more upset if I were a Mac-only user and wanted to use the latest version and features for which I paid. Now I'm just disappointed. I don't have time to remake all of my botanically accurate trees and herbs in splines from Tree Pro or Plant Studio or to "retopologize" all of them, so they need to be props. Getting back to the first issue, the menu is there in Mac v.15 for importing polygon models, just not in v.19. Perhaps that will be fixed as it's a long-standing useful feature.
  9. Thanks I'll try another version. Having it all in one version or at least platform is easier unless I'm running Parallels, VMWare, or Bootcamp on the Mac. Not always feasible as the VMs are fairly CPU intensive and Bootcamp is just Windows running on a Mac (no Mac multitasking), depends what else I'm working on. Sadly the PC version of AM has been superior for a long time, but I need to do certain things from my Mac once in a while and it's nice to stay there in the moment. I work with PCs/servers for a living and too much hardware multitasking at home feels like work. The prop issue sucks though.
  10. Hello All, This is probably easy for most, but I haven't done this on the Mac version for a while. It's always consistent on the PC version How do I import a DXF, 3DS, or OBJ in the modeling window in v19? I need to make MDL files. I've already decimated them with MeshMixer to make them less dense. On the PC it's always the same way - r-click in the modeling window, choose plugins -> import -> and the model type ...easy as pie On the Mac version there is no plugin choice in the r-click menu of a model or the choreography. All I get is the standard import sub-menu. In the old days it was a 3rd party plugin that you had to download and place in the plugins HXT folder. What is going on now? See pics attached. Thanks! On a side note several different OBJs have also caused an error when trying to use them as a prop. Not sure if it's just my setup or a known problem with v19 on the Mac. They open fine in MeshLab and MeshMixer so the files are good. I even re-saved the OBJs in different programs and no change. See attached pic of the error. It happened in 19.0F and 19.0L.
  11. Gotcha, yeah that was dumb of me. For a moment I was treating it like the old school licenses. I still have my old code memorized from version 7. I sent an e-mail to support to ask how I can kill it on my Mac and use it on my PC since the PC is more stable and new. I don't want to buy 2 licenses, since I will only use one on my new PC in reality. I hope there is an easy way, otherwise I just wasted money on a license I won't use.
  12. Hello dumb question here. I got my new reg code for AM from the store to work on my Mac, but using the code on my PC or copying over the Mac “lic” file to the PC didn’t work. What am I missing? You can tell I don’t upgrade often. ;-)
  13. thanks and nice shot I used to work at a children's zoo and we had female Jackson's Chameleons - I used to hand feed them with live prey so I'm familiar with this type of view. I still have a license for 3D Coat 3 so I'll see if that works first, otherwise I may upgrade to 3D Coat 4 and try another technique.
  14. Is this a dead issue? Did anyone consistently get 3D Coat to work? 3D Coat is on sale now, so I'm interested in upgrading if this workflow works.
  15. regarding the keypad issue, I carry around a small USB keypad for navigation on any Mac or PC laptop - works great and it's cheap I was thinking of getting a Surface Pro (not my fav) or the Wacom Tablet PC (very nice) for on-the-go Photoshop, Painter, and AM 3D duties not sure what to get, maybe neither they are all expensive but the direct drawing/splining is cool and easier/more comfortable than a mouse - the Wacom stylus has several modifiers switches for complete control
  16. I was trying to bang out something halfway-decent over the weekend but not even 1/3 done at this point. Next time... I need the practice anyway.
  17. I tried a search for peirrotsc on the forum, no luck. What was the specific workaround (or series of workarounds)?
  18. This is exciting news. I always enjoyed the expos with lively demos, posters, and new tips and tricks I picked-up even in a few minutes. The guys staffing the booth were always helpful with WIP issues I had, and I could jump right in on the project on my laptop at the hotel that night. I remember that Steve S. and the Crouchers helped me a bunch. They probably thought: "Oh this guy again?", but they were always cool. I was at Siggraph LA this year, and it was sort of sad with way less company attendance than usual... and of course you guys have been missed by me and many others attending the show for the years you have not had a booth. Looking forward to more new info... Thanks, Andy
  19. Thanks for checking. You might have to use VLC. The old Quicktime codecs are funky. QT 7.7.9 on Win 7 opens it fine. Many of my old QTs (from the 90s) don't open on my modern Mac. I had to convert them. The video was uploaded by Hash on the FTP site from the year 2000. :-)
  20. Hey guys, I want to do something similar to this old Continuums open credit animation. The material and particle FX should be straightforward, but the cutting aspect might be difficult. I'm not a super power user. It looks like the pre-made text fades in so that is not so bad, but what is the best way to make the beam trace out the letters to fake the "cutting"? I'm going to simulate an actual CO2 laser cutting steel and using the red reference beam. The laser will be in some sort of a gimbal apparatus. I can't find any decent tutorials on the techniques. Thanks ahead of time... ftp://ftp.hash.com/pub/movies/continuums.mov
