  1. Hey guys and gal,

     

    I just noticed something else interesting about the blink the Gyllenhaal character does around 00:13 in the clip above. Frame thru it and see how his eyelids are not exactly in synch. Sometimes called a "Pixar blink", it's very easy to overdo this in animation. Whoever animated him here kept it tastefully small.

  2. There's a certain body of opinion that says "straight ahead" just isn't done in CG because nobody actually does a complete key on frame 1, then a complete key on frame 2, then a complete key on frame 3.... in the way that a 2D animator might make a series of consecutive drawings.

     

    The workflow you describe is probably about as close to straight ahead as anyone gets.

     

    pose-to-pose has the advantage that you can see early on if all your poses are effective by themselves and together. The big poses are the major storytelling devices in your animation, they tell the most about what your character is thinking about what he is doing so it's best to make sure they are all working before polishing something. This is also important if you have to show an initial concept to a director.

     

    Straight ahead has the advantage that what you have done at any point so far actually looks like something finished. Pose-to-pose with raw computer transitions between them looks like floating crap at first and very few people you show a first pass to have the discernment to "see" the poses and disregard the transitions.

     

    At animationmentor they stressed pose-to-pose. As I became better at making strong story-telling poses, and became more confident that I would be able to finesse the transitions I liked working in pose-to-pose more.

     

    There's a third approach called "layered" that CG makes more possible than 2D did. But that's a story for another day. ;)

  3. I gave each foot a null, but when I try to move the null to move the foot. Either the foot doesn't move or only the foot moves.

     

    Those are two different problems. Hard to diagnose by just that description.

     

    My Simplest IK Leg tut shows one way to rig a simple leg. (It presumes you already know how to attach CPs to bones)

    And a bit of music history I just read there...

     

    As playing the saw requires a strong left hand, most players were men, though one well known lady saw player was actress Marlene Dietrich. She has played the saw at her performances for the soldiers during WWII, in a movie, on radio, and for friends at parties.

     

    Now I have to get a musical saw!

    you meant the middle pose of the scene, right?

     

    Those look like identical poses, what changed?

     

    Here's something that would be cool to use. Look at the "pffff" expression that this guy uses at 00:13

  6. Thanks! I wanted to make something that seemed like it might be in the spirit of an MGM musical like the Wizard of Oz without being too self-serious.

     

    I'm assuming the second half of the song is in the Winkee village (or somewhere there are lots of Winkees).

     

    Winkies as far as the eye can see. I think if we had about six similar but not identical winkies that would be enough to fill up the front row of any crowd scene and winkies behind them could be image mapped "hair".

     

    This could be in winkie town, or they could be coming from the nearby fields where they were working (at dawn apparently) to prop up the agrarian economy for their tin-fisted ruler.

     

    The music sounds like it comes from an unusual instrument. Are we going to see Winkees playing musical instruments in the streets? and are there going to be any unusual instruments?
    The beginning is a concertina played by TinServant.

     

    After that, I'm thinking there's a parade going on to march TinWoodsman and Co. out of town. There would certainly be room for odd-looking instruments.

  7. There seems to be no combination of controller settings that will completely close Woot's lips, so that no teeth are visible. It's most visible when his head is tilted up slightly.

    This tends to leave him with either a bucktoothed or a slackjawed look.

     

    Some slight closing is had by curling the lips in, but the result is not a normal mouth-closed look.

     

    Any solutions?

  8. Ok the one part of animation I feel the least proficient in is facial animation I simply need to do more of these. So after several attempts all I am not to impressed with myself I thought I should through something out there to start from.

     

    So here is take 1 of 15b

     

    I think that last one is way too complicated. What can you think of that doesn't involve a grimace?
